Being a vey social person, Wilson touched on some serious issues and did not shy away from the problems that suround us. And now, here he is with an album that spreads joy and guarantees good time moods for the listeners.

Big Daddy Wilson & the Goosebumps Bros. - I Need You 2nd single from the new album of   Plan B will be released September 22: digitally but also on CD and on Vinyl. "I thought it would be cool to have an album and call it Plan B because of the my name. Also , the title Plan B has a double meaning. When you’re doing business, you always need a Plan B.  Most of the songs of this album were written during the Covid 19 Lockdown time. And because of that, we thought about releasing a digital album. The plan was to do this album with my band “ The Goosebumps Bros “. This would be the first joint album that I produced with my band and the first digital only album.

Greg Copeland is in juli 1954 geboren in Portsmouth (Virginia), en woont al ruim dertig jaar in Duitsland. Zijn zangstijl is sterk beïnvloed door James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Robert Johnson, Howlin´ Wolf e.d. en muzikaal zit hij dan ook ergens tussen de Deep Down Blues, soul en funk. Hij heeft samengewerkt met o.m. Gerry Williams (ex-Eruption), en de blues gitaristen Gregor Hilden, Guitar Crusher en Kai Strauss. Daarnaast heeft hij zijn eigen band en maakt hij met Martin Messing deel uit van het akoestische bluesduo Deep Down South.

Beiden zijn expats, beiden door de liefde voor een vrouw elders terechtgekomen en beiden delen de liefde voor de blues. De Nederlander Hans Theessink kwam door de liefde terecht in Oostenrijk en de Amerikaan Big Daddy Wilson bleef om dezelfde reden in Duitsland hangen. In het verleden hebben de heren al vaker samengewerkt en het podium gedeeld. Nu is besloten samen een album te gaan opnemen, dat onlangs is verschenen onder de titel “Pay Day”.

BB King vertelde me "The Blues are a mystery" in een van onze interviews. Willie Dixon, aan de andere kant, verklaarde: "De blues zijn de ware feiten van het leven". Een tegenstelling? Alleen schijnbaar. Blauw is beide. Sommigen beschouwen de blues nu als museumachtig. Het tegenovergestelde is waar. Wanneer de klassieker "Everybody Ought To Treat A Stranger Right" van Hans Theessink en Big Daddy Wilson Blind Willie Johnson begint, is het qua actualiteit moeilijk te verslaan. Het lied, dat in 1930 werd geschreven, heeft in 2021 niets aan relevantie ingeboet. En Mississippi John Hurt's "Pay Day" zou ook kunnen worden opgevat als een hint voor onze samenleving, want op een gegeven moment betaalt iedereen. Catastrofes daarentegen hebben altijd een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de Amerikaanse rootsmuziek, vooral in folk en blues,

Hij is afkomstig uit Edenton, North Caroline en inmiddels al sinds zijn militaire diensttijd woonachtig in Duitsland. Big Daddy Wilson werd verliefd op een Duits meisje, Helga, waarmee hij nu in Bremen woont. Het was ook Helga die hem kennis liet maken met de blues door hem mee te nemen naar een optreden van de Hamburgse bluesmuzikant Abi Wallenstein. Hoe raar kan het lopen? We zijn nu enkele decennia verder en Big Daddy Wilson is zelf een gerespecteerde soul- en bluesmuzikant geworden.

 Binnenkort wordt weer een album toegevoegd aan de indrukwekkende catalogus van Big Daddy Wilson. Een mooie gelegenheid voor een gesprek met de vriendelijke bluesman en zijn echtgenote en manager Helga, de reden dat hij zo’n veertig jaar geleden in Duitsland is blijven wonen; in Bremen om precies te zijn. Het was ook zijn huidige vrouw, die hem destijds meenam naar zijn eerste bluesconcert. Eerder had hij absoluut geen ervaringen met de blues. Het eerste optreden dat hij bijwoonde werd gegeven door de uit Hamburg afkomstige Abi Wallenstein. Hoe raar kan het lopen? Wilson leerde als Amerikaan dus de blues kennen via een Duitse muzikant. Tijdens het gesprek bleek ook dat hij, net als ik, in 1979 als soldaat naar Duitsland was gestuurd om West-Europa tegen de Russen te beschermen. Het is zelfs mogelijk dat wij destijds aan dezelfde NAVO-oefeningen hebben deelgenomen.
