Big Daddy Wilson – Hard Time Blues

Hij is afkomstig uit Edenton, North Caroline en inmiddels al sinds zijn militaire diensttijd woonachtig in Duitsland. Big Daddy Wilson werd verliefd op een Duits meisje, Helga, waarmee hij nu in Bremen woont. Het was ook Helga die hem kennis liet maken met de blues door hem mee te nemen naar een optreden van de Hamburgse bluesmuzikant Abi Wallenstein. Hoe raar kan het lopen? We zijn nu enkele decennia verder en Big Daddy Wilson is zelf een gerespecteerde soul- en bluesmuzikant geworden.
Onlangs is zijn nieuwe album “Hard Time Blues” verschenen met daarop dertien nummers, waarvan elf van eigen hand en twee nummers van Eric Bibb. In een interview, dat ik onlangs met hem had, noemde hij Eric Bibb een groot vriend en mentor. Opvallend bij het beluisteren is dat het geluid enigszins is veranderd, gemoderniseerd. Dit is te danken aan de productie van de jonge Engelsman Glen Scott, die heeft samengewerkt met o.m. Mary J. Blige, James Blunt, de Backstreet Boys en Eric Bibb. Wilson: “Mede door hem heeft de cd een moderner geluid gekregen en zijn we wat verder weg gegaan van de downhome blues, soul en gospel, die je van me gewend bent. Dit heb ik gedaan om het jongere publiek wat meer te bereiken.” Scott heeft meegeschreven aan een aantal nummers en is ook te horen op toetsen, gitaar en bas. Opvallend is dat Wilson een – naar eigen zeggen – positief, realistisch beeld van de huidige maatschappij heeft. Er is heel wat mis met onze maatschappij, zoals hij bezingt in “Hard Time Blues” en “Poor Black Children”, maar gelooft dat het goed komt, als we er onze schouders maar onder zetten. Nummers die wat mij betreft een speciale vermelding verdienen zijn het door Eric Bibb geschreven titelnummer “Hard Time Blues”, “New Born” over de geboorte een van zijn kinderen, en de zeer mooie blues “Dearly Beloved” over afscheid nemen van een dierbare.
Voor wie Wilson al die jaren gevolgd heeft en is het nieuwe geluid in het begin even wennen. Maar uiteindelijk ben ik tot de conclusie gekomen dat “Hard Time Blues” mede door de goedgeschreven nummers en moderne productie een uitstekend album geworden is.

Now several decades later, Big Daddy Wilson has become a respected soul and blues musician himself.
Recently his new album “Hard Time Blues” has been released with thirteen songs, eleven of which are his own and two songs by Eric Bibb. In an interview I recently had with him, he referred to Eric Bibb as a great friend and mentor. Striking when listening is that the sound has slightly changed, modernized. This is thanks to the production of the young Englishman Glen Scott, who has collaborated with the likes of Mary J. Blige, James Blunt, the Backstreet Boys and Eric Bibb. Wilson: “Partly because of him, the CD has acquired a more modern sound and we have moved a bit further away from the downhome blues, soul and gospel, which you are used to from me. I did this to reach the younger audience a bit more.” Scott has co-written a number of songs and can also be heard on keyboards, guitar and bass. It is striking that Wilson has – in his own words – a positive, realistic image of today's society. There is a lot wrong with our society, as he sings about in "Hard Time Blues" and "Poor Black Children", but believes that it will be okay if we just put our shoulders to it. Songs that deserve a special mention in my opinion are the title track “Hard Time Blues”, written by Eric Bibb, “New Born” about the birth of one of his children, and the very beautiful blues “Dearly Beloved” about saying goodbye to a loved one.
For those who have followed Wilson all these years, the new sound takes some getting used to in the beginning. But in the end I came to the conclusion that “Hard Time Blues” has become an excellent album, partly due to the well-written songs and modern production.
