In 2019 verscheen zijn eerste studioalbum “Spain To Italy”, dat twee jaar later werd gevolgd door het livealbum “Live At The Harlington”, vorig jaar gevolgd door “A Savage Life”.
Onlangs is Doms derde studioalbum “Buried In The Hail” verschenen met elf nummers, waarvan er tien door Dom Martin zelf zijn geschreven. Hij wordt ondersteund door bassist Ben Graham en drummer Laurence McKeown. Het album is opgenomen in de Golden Egg Studio in Dublin met de hooggewaardeerde Chris O’Brien en Graham Murphy aan de knoppen. Net als op zijn vorige album wordt de luisteraar verrast door een mix van akoestische en elektrische nummers. Martin schakelt heel makkelijk van akoestische countryblues naar stevige bluesrock en weer terug. Wellicht vinden sommigen dat hij zijn richting nog niet gevonden heeft. Just like on his previous album, the listener is surprised by a mix of acoustic and electric songs. Martin switches very easily from acoustic country blues to heavy blues rock and back again. Perhaps some feel that he has not yet found his direction. However, I am of the opinion that he knows exactly what he wants and that he therefore follows various paths within the blues, which ensures that his work can be called very varied. Dom Martin has not had an easy life. He grew up in torn Belfast and has struggled with addictions, meaning that at the age of 33 he has already lived more lives than someone twice or three times his age. Someone who has a lot to say and fortunately Dom Martin has the talent to convey his experiences and vision in a musical way. Examples of this are “Belfast Blues”, in which he describes his time with addiction. In songs “Government” he shows his disgust for the current world order. The only cover is also beautiful, the Willie Nelson-written “Crazy”, which transitions from a calm and raw sung intro with a voice that is reminiscent of a cross between Tom Waits and Jacques Brel, to a genuine blues song. A very varied new album from this talented Irishman. Highly recommended.
