Ooit, kort na het uitkomen van haar eerste album “Wildfire”, vertelde Elles Bailey mij dat ze als de dood was voor het zogenaamde ‘2nd album syndrome’. Het eerste album werd alom goed ontvangen en de opvolger zou minstens net zo goed moeten zijn. Daar is ze toen prima in geslaagd. En nu is nummertje 3 uitgekomen. Is de uit het Engelse Bristol afkomstige zangeres er in geslaagd die stijgende lijn voort te zetten? Waren haar eerste twee platen nog opgenomen in Nashville, “Shining In The Half Light” is, mede door de pandemie en het feit dat zij toen zes maanden zwanger was, volledig in het Verenigd Koninkrijk opgenomen.

Op het album staan tien door Elles zelfgeschreven nummers. Zij wordt begeleid door Joe Wilkins (gitaar), Johnny Henderson (toetsen), Matthew Waer (bas) en Matthew Jones (drums). De productie was in handen van rockproducer Dan Weller, iemand met een heel andere muzikale achtergrond dan Elles, wat weer heeft gezorgd voor een andere benadering dan haar voorgaande albums. Naast een uitstekende zangeres met dat kenmerkende hese stemgeluid – een overblijfsel van een ziekte die ze als 3-jarige had - is Elles ook een prima liedjesschrijver, waar vooral ook de teksten het zeker waard zijn om te worden beluisterd. In “Cheats And Liars” en “Standing In The Half Light” vertelt zij over de artiesten die hebben moeten vechten tijdens de pandemie om het hoofd boven water te houden. Daarbij zijn het soulvolle “Riding Out The Storm” en de rockende blues “Sushine City” met een prachtige interactie tussen zang en slidegitaar een speciale vermelding waard. Een meer dan uitstekende cd, die bewijst dat Bailey zeker de stijgende lijn heeft weten voort te zetten.

Production was in the hands of rock producer Dan Weller, someone with a very different musical background from Elles, which in turn has resulted in a different approach than her previous albums. In addition to being an excellent singer with that characteristic hoarse voice – a remnant of an illness she had as a 3-year-old – Elles is also a fine songwriter, where the lyrics are certainly worth listening to. In “Cheats And Liars” and “Standing In The Half Light” she talks about the artists who had to fight during the pandemic to keep their heads above water. In addition, the soulful “Riding Out The Storm” and the rocking blues “Sushine City” with a beautiful interaction between vocals and slide guitar. are worth a special mentioning. A more than excellent CD, which proves that Bailey has certainly managed to continue the upward trend.
