De band rond zanger en gitarist Bob ‘Sully’ Sullivan, verkozen tot Best Live Band bij de 2020 San Diego Blues Awards, bestaat uit negen zeer ervaren muzikanten, die hun sporen hebben verdiend bij bands en muzikanten uiteenlopend van de Temptations, Elton John tot Eric Clapton en Lynyrd Skynyrd. Naast Sully bestaat de band uit James East (bas, zang), Tripp Sprague (sax, fluit, harmonica), Tres Hodgens (drums), Mark Hattersley (toetsen, zang), Nacho (percussie, zang), Steve Dillard (tromper, flugelhorn), Jon Harford (leadgitaar), Dennis Cruzan (trompet), April Leslie (sax), Tomoko Nomura (sax) en Jeff Snider (leadgitaar).
Onlangs verscheen hun debuutalbum “Let’s Straighten It Out” met daarop tien covers van soul- en bluesnummers, die stammen uit de zestiger en zeventiger jaren. De productie was in handen van Chris Goldsmith, bekend van zijn werk met o.m. Blind Boys of Alabama, Ben Harper en Charlie Musselwhite. The Sully Band is meer dan alleen maar een coverband, want ieder nummer krijgt een geheel eigen bewerking. Deze zorgt voor een frisse aanpak, terwijl de klassiekers – want zo mogen we ze wel noemen – herkenbaar blijven. Het resultaat is een prima en opwindend album geworden. Bijzondere vermelding verdienen wat mij betreft Billy Prestons “Nothing from Nothing”, “Hallelujah, I Love Her So” van Ray Charles. Het absolute hoogtepunt is het duet met zangeres Rebecca Jade “When the Battle Is Over” van Dr. John en Jessie Hill. Een prima album.

Their debut album “Let's Straighten It Out” was recently released with ten covers of soul and blues songs, which date from the sixties and seventies. Production was in the hands of Chris Goldsmith, known for his work with Blind Boys of Alabama, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, among others. The Sully Band is more than just a cover band, because every song gets its own arrangement. This provides a fresh approach, while the classics – because that's what we can call them – remain recognizable. The result has become a fine and exciting album. In my opinion, Billy Preston's “Nothing from Nothing”, “Hallelujah, I Love Her So” by Ray Charles deserve special mention. The absolute highlight is the duet with singer Rebecca Jade “When the Battle Is Over” by Dr. John and Jessie Hill. A very fine album.
