De uit New York afkomstige Regina Bonelli heeft jarenlang in diverse bands en achtergrondkoortjes gezongen voordat zij in 2016 haar debuutalbum “Open Up The Door” uitbracht. Dit album werd alom goed ontvangen en hetzelfde gebeurde met de opvolger “Love Letter”, dat drie jaar later verscheen. Bonelli komt uit een muzikale familie – haar vader was muzikant – en op haar vierde speelde zij al piano en als tiener leerde zij gitaar spelen.
Onlangs verscheen haar derde album “Truth Hurts” met daarop negen nummers, waarvan zes eigen composities. Ondersteund wordt zij hier door een band dat zich “The True Groove All-Stars” noemt en bestaat uit de gitaristen Tomás Doncker en James Dellatacoma, bassist Kevin Jenkins, toetsenist Nick Rolfe, saxofonist Mark Henry en drummer Leroy Thompson. Muzikaal bevinden we ons midden tussen soul en blues. Regina Bonelli is een zangeres, die niet slechts een liedje zingt, maar ook de emotie erin legt, waardoor de luisteraar voelt wat ze bedoelt. Nummers die een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn de Greg Allman cover ‘Cross To Bear”, “Mama Raised A Sweet Thing”, dat al op haar eerste album stond, het swingende “Truth Hurts” en mijn favoriet, Willie Dixons “Killing Floor”, dat hier een bijzondere soul/rock-versie krijgt. Een prima cd met heerlijk rockende soulblues.

New York native Regina Bonelli sang in various bands and backing choirs for years before releasing her debut album “Open Up The Door” in 2016. This album was widely received and the same happened with the follow-up “Love Letter”, which was released three years later. Bonelli comes from a musical family – her father was a musician – and she played the piano at the age of four and learned to play the guitar as a teenager.
Recently her third album “Truth Hurts” was released with nine songs, six of which are own compositions. She is supported here by a band that calls itself “The True Groove All-Stars” and consists of guitarists Tomás Doncker and James Dellatacoma, bassist Kevin Jenkins, keyboardist Nick Rolfe, saxophonist Mark Henry and drummer Leroy Thompson. Musically we are in the middle between soul and blues. Regina Bonelli is a singer, who not only just sings a song, but also the emotion in it, so that the listener feels what she means. Songs that deserve a special mention are the Greg Allman cover "Cross To Bear", "Mama Raised A Sweet Thing", which was already on her first album, the swinging "Truth Hurts" and my favourite, Willie Dixon's "Killing Floor". that gets a special soul/rock version here. A fine CD with wonderfully rocking soul blues.
