Recensie: Joe Bonamassa – Time Clocks

Het blijft toch een druk baasje, deze New Yorkse gitarist Joe Bonamassa. Sinds zijn debuut in het jaar 2000 staan al zo’n dikke dertig albums op zijn naam, zowel eigen studio- en livealbums als samenwerkingen met anderen, zoals Beth Hart. Daarnaast produceert hij nog voor anderen en duikt regelmatig op cd’s van anderen op, zoals onlangs weer op Dions recente album “Stomping Ground”. En met “Time Clocks” is onlangs Bonamassa’s nieuwe cd verschenen.

Hierop staan tien eigen nummers, gedeeltelijk geschreven met medewerking van een ander. Muzikaal wordt hij gesteund door Steve Mackey (bas), Lachy Doley (piano), Bunna Lawrie (didgeridoo), Bobby Summerfield (percussie), Anton Fig (drums, percussie), Mahalia Barnes, Juanita Tippins en Prinnie Stevens (achtergrondzang). Muzikaal is en blijft het nog steeds de Bonamassa, die we kennen. Stevige, goed in het gehoor liggende bluesrock. Toch is er iets veranderd, de gitaar neemt een wat minder dominante plaats in en is nu eerder dienend aan het nummer. De aandacht ligt hier wat meer bij de compositie en tekst. Na het instrumentale “Pilgrimage” horen we het stevige “Notches”, dat al als single is uitgebracht, en wordt gevolgd door de soulblues “The Heart That Never Waits”. Het titelnummer “Time Clocks” is een bijzonder fraaie compositie, waarin de samenzang met Mahalia Barnes mooi naar voren komt. Met het bijtende “Questions And Answers” en de bluesballad “Mind’s Eye” komt de blues om de hoek kijken. Verrassend en bombastisch wordt het met de rocker “Curtain Call”. Mede door de strijkers, het Bonham-achtige drumwerk en het gebruik van strijkers doet associaties opkomen met Led Zeppelins “Kashmir”. In de rustig beginnende powerballad “The Loyal Kind” scheurt de gitaar weer als vanouds en met de boogie “Hanging On A Loser” en “Known Unknown”. Tien prima songs, waarvan “Mind’s Eye” en “Curtain Call” mijn persoonlijke favorieten zijn.

Still a busy body, this New York guitarist Joe Bonamassa. It contains ten own songs, partly written with the cooperation of someone else. Musically, it is and still remains the Bonamassa we know. Solid, good blues rock. Yet something has changed, the guitar takes a less dominant place and is now more of a service to the song. The focus here is more on the composition and text. After the instrumental 'Pilgrimage' we hear the heavy 'Notches', which has already been released as a single, and is followed by the soul blues 'The Heart That Never Waits'. The title track “Time Clocks” is a very beautiful composition, in which the harmony vocals with Mahalia Barnes come to the fore. With the biting "Questions And Answers" and the blues ballad "Mind's Eye" the blues comes into play. It becomes surprising and bombastic with the rocker “Curtain Call”. Partly due to the strings, the Bonham-like drumming and the use of strings, associations arise with Led Zeppelin's “Kashmir”. In the quietly starting power ballad “The Loyal Kind” the guitar rips again as usual and with the boogie “Hanging On A Loser” and “Known Unknown”. Ten great songs, of which “Mind's Eye” and “Curtain Call” are my personal favorites.
