Steamhammer – Wailing Again Geschreven door: Eric Campfens i.s.m. BarnOwlBlues | FB Eric Campfens  Een nieuw album van Steamhammer. Wie waren dat ook weer? Even duiken in het grijze verleden. Steamhammer is opgericht in 1968 en tijdens hun bestaan brachten zij tot 1972 vier albums uit, die alom best goed werden ontvangen. Ook de individuele muzikanten werden hoog gewaardeerd. Pete Sears en Martin Pugh speelden bijvoorbeeld mee op de eerste platen van Rod Stewart en de band begeleidde Freddie King tijdens diens tournees door Europa.

Muzikaal zaten de heren verankerd in de blues, waarbij ze uitstapjes naar progressieve rock en jazz zeker niet schuwden

 Nadat de band in 1972 uit elkaar was gevallen gingen de leden ieder huns weegs. En nu, ruim vijftig jaar nadat de band is opgeheven hebben de oud-leden Martin Pugh (gitaar) en Pete Sears (bas, toetsen) besloten in 2020 de draad weer met elkaar op te pakken. Samen een ander oud-lid, John Lingwood (drums), die onder meer heeft gespeeld bij Jefferson Starship en Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, en nieuweling Phil Colombatto (zang, harmonica, gitaar) is de band weer springlevend. En dat is meteen te horen aan hun nieuwe album “Wailing Again”. Hierop staan acht nummers, deels cov

ers en deels eigen werk, die de luisteraar meevoeren naar de gouden jaren van Steamhammer. Nog steeds is de basis de stevige blues en ook nu weer zijn invloeden uit jazz en progrock niet te ontkennen. Colombatto heeft een uitstekende stem en zijn harmonica werk is uit de kunst. De heren gaan meteen voortvarend van start met de stevige rocker “I Wouldn’t Have Thought”, die wordt opgevolgd door het bluesnummer “High Low Jick Jack Johnny”. Rockend gaat het verder met “Fool For You” en het vlotte “Wailing Once Again”, waarin de band laat horen hoe goed zij zijn. Voor mij persoonlijk het hoogtepunt van de plaat. “Midnight Blues Train” laat mooi slidegitaar horen, “Man In The Blue Suede Shoes (Megan’s Song)” is een heerlijke bluesjam. 

Het tweede hoogtepunt volgt met het tien minuten lange “Twenty Four Hours” om daarna af te sluiten met “Junior’s Wailing”, een remake van een van hun eigen nummers van het eerste album uit 1968. Een prima album van vier uitstekende muzikanten die oude tijden laten herleven.

And now, more than fifty years after the band disbanded, former members Martin Pugh (guitar) and Pete Sears (bass, keys) in 2020 have decided to get back together. Together with another former member, John Lingwood (drums), who has played with Jefferson Starship and Manfred Mann's Earth Band, among others, and newcomer Phil Colombatto (vocals, harmonica, guitar) the band is alive and well again. And you can immediately hear that on their new album “Wailing Again”. It contains eight songs, partly covers and partly own work, which transport the listener to the golden years of Steamhammer. The basis is still the firmer blues and again influences from jazz and prog rock are undeniable. Colombatto has an excellent voice and his harmonica work is top notch. The gentlemen immediately start energetically with the solid rocker "I Wouldn't Have Thought", which is followed by the blues number "High Low Jick Jack Johnny". Rocking it continues with “Fool For You” and the smooth “Wailing Once Again”, in which the band shows how good they are. For me personally the highlight of the album. “Midnight Blues Train” shows nice slide guitar, “Man In The Blue Suede Shoes (Megan's Song)” is a wonderful blues jam. The second highlight follows with the ten minutes long “Twenty Four Hours” and then closes with “Junior's Wailing”, a remake of one of their own songs from the first album from 1968. A great album by four excellent musicians who remember old times to relive.
