Like a concept album that instead of leading you down a New York backstreet takes you up an East Lancs back lane Mel Goes Funky, the new album is far more than the cliché ‘What’s on the tin’ might suggest.
As Mel (Adrian Melling) takes us down a fascinating, absorbing and revealing musical time tunnel back to his wild and untamed youth via a series of classic 70s flavoured musical vignettes where sharpness, wit and cunning held sway. Card tricks, long boring warm summers, girls beyond reach and more. It’s the sound of a certain, but timeless, age and if you don’t understand you’ve either got no soul, funk or grew up in some privileged gilded palace.
The Lancs diminutive, but charismatic rock’n’roll runaway diminutive Mel Outsider returns with flamboyance and a funky strut and swagger
And with his crack augmented seven piece band to present the groups’ eagerly awaited second album with a new direction yet again Mel Goes Funky.
Formerly as frontman with acclaimed Brit blues rockers The Outsiders UK, he formed The Mel Outsider Reformation and released their debut album Miss Victory V in 2022.
With more of a funky rocking blues soul blueprint, Mel Goes Funky features ten new numbers that see Mel taking the usual look back over his tongue and cheek vista, with songs like ‘Consider The Waitress’ demonstrating a distinct disappointment with drive through fast food truck stops whilst ‘Doll With No Shoes’ retells the story of a small town waitress with Hollywood dreams returning penniless to the town of her origins and ‘Take Me To The Lady Doctor’ remembers Mel once being the victim of a witches curse on Tib St Manchester!
The revised Colne Lancs based group comprises Mel, vocals, percussion , Matt Pawson, bass, guitar, Dan Arnold, guitar, Nick Cornall, organ, piano and keyboards, Helen May, vocals, Karl Francis, drums, vocal, percussion and Andy Morell, sax and brass . The new album is again produced in Oswaldtwistle, Accrington by ex Real World studio’s Mark Jones. Mark who has previously produced such luminaries as Sean Ryder’s Black Grape, Patti Smith and Peter Gabriel to name but a few.
Mel has produced twenty-eight albums for artists including Michael Chapman, Heads Hands And Feet along with New York songwriter / poet Angela Costa (winner of the Alan Ginsberg prize). He travelled and worked with Delta blues legend David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards who was the only living musical connection to Robert Johnson. Mel also plans to release an album of unheard ‘Honeyboy recordings later in 2025.
