It has only taken us 13 years but if any one song/performance really 'broke' Jo Harman as a live act, it was the compelling, bone-deep sincerity of her reworking of the Citizen Cope song 'Sideways'

 

More often than not performed as the penultimate song of the set, over time the song morphed into a 10 minutes long or more epic. Not only did it serve to showcase Jo's unique vocal prowess, it was also a vehicle to demonstrate the fact that her musicians were amongst the very best on the circuit. All of which helped catapult her career and reputation in short order, leading to her V2 investing in her (initially self released) debut album 'Dirt On My Tongue' and the rest, as they say, is geography (sic).....

Jo Harman - The Angel Leaves Her Watermark

This is the voice I fell in love with, the best part of 15 years ago. The husk, the overtones, the slow vibrato, much of which has melted away into an adjusted, and undoubtedly a more 'knowing', way of singing today.

This is a post 'Live At Hideaway' but pre debut album 2012 recording of 'The Angel Leaves Her Watermark', a track that finally saw the light of day on the 2020 'Signature Soul' collaboration with Redtenbacher's Funkestra, albeit in quite a different tempo and feel and, indeed, arrangement.

But, whilst we wait for Jo to make new music, we thought it too good not to warrant a digital release so ....

Dit album heeft bijna twee jaar in de la gelegen, maar is feitelijk het eerste (en enige) echte studio-optreden voor Jo Harman in acht of negen jaar. 

Haar 'doorbraak'-release 'People We Become' uit 2017 - een break-up-album als er ooit één was - werd eind 2015, begin 2016 opgenomen in Nashville.

Jo Harman has released a 'double A' single comprising her original blues-rock stomper 'Underneath The River' alongside a gentle and heartfelt 'stripped back' version of the Joni Mitchell classic 'A Case Of You'.   Both tracks are taken from Jo's live album '3 Hearts Live' recorded earlier this year in Cardiff and released as a 'soup to nuts' mixed but otherwise entirely unedited and unfixed double album CD of the complete concert.

Voorafgaand aan het optreden van Jo Harman en haar band op 1 november 2013 in De Boerderij in Zoetermeer had ik de gelegenheid voor een kort interview. Toen ik arriveerde waren Jo en haar entourage net klaar met eten.

begin met de opmerking dat het mij is opgevallen dat zij sinds het uitbrengen van haar CD: Dirt On My Tongue eigenlijk constant met optredens bezig is. Is zij niet in Groot-Brittannië aan de slag dan toch wel in Nederland of België voor enkele shows en weer snel terug naar haar eigen land om binnen enkele weken weer op het vasteland onderweg te zijn.

Following the success of Volume 1, a second Volume of 'Songs Of Isolation' has been announced in support of NHS help fo heroes Charity.  The compilation album features not only many familiar names from the world of Blues and beyond - such as Martin Harley, Elles Bailey, Bill Wyman, Jo Harman and many more - but also some very noted singer songwriters such as Rumer (currently sitting at no1 on the Americana charts and in the top 20 of the national charts) , Kiki Dee and even former England Cricket International, and Sky Pundit, Mark Butcher, himself a fine musician, in amongst the 15 artists involved.
