1 - Why are these two, Memphis Slim and Joe Louis Walker, your greatest blues heroes?
Giles Robson: Memphis Slim was the ultimate combination of a great artist and a great businessman and I respect all he achieved against huge odds. Jose was a dear friend and mentor and very pivotal in the success of my career. I will be forever grateful.
2 - How did you get into the BLUES?
Giles Robson: It was in the early nineties when there was a big blues revival and blues was everywhere. I picked up a harmonica in Toledo in Spain and then when I got back home I saw African American harmonica and guitar blues duo Cephas and Wiggins perform at my local Arts Centre and was set up for life!
3 - Who are or were your greatest sources of inspiration or role models?
Giles Robson: All of the classic Blues legends - Sonny Boy, Little Walter, Muddy, Wolf, Big Bill Broonzy and also Jazz legends like Basie, Ellington, Django and from today - Muddy’s last guitar player John Primer has been a HUGE influence. We work together and I’ve learned a massive amount.
3 - How did the songs for ‘Nine Blues Originals’, or the songs in general, come about?
Giles Robson:My last two albums were fresh interpretations of classics and this time I wanted to write an album of originals. I note down song ideas all the time and then I ordinary worked up about 15 into competed songs and then Eventually committed to seven of them and included two songs that people at my shows wanted to hear as acoustic duo recordings - “Your Dirty Look & Your Sneaky Grin” and The G.R. Shuffle”
5 Why collaborate with the acclaimed guitarist Manny Fizzotti again?
Giles Robson:Manny is a very accomplished, subtle and mellow guitarist and is perfect for an album recording as he leaves a lot of space and the tracks always sit well. He also has a high level of creativity.
5a How did you choose the covers? Town To Town (For Memphis Slim)
Giles Robson:Well thats my reworking a Memphis Slim Song “Boogin’ and Bluesin’. His song was the story of his musical life all in one boogie woogie and it reminded of me of what I was doing - playing blues and boogie from town to town. At one point I was playing 15 countries a year! He’s been such a great influence I decided to pay tribute to him by telling my musical life story through a reworking of his song - because a lot of what I have done was inspired by him!
6 - What are some of the most important lessons you have learned during your experiences in the music world?
Giles Robson:Always be true to music you love and don’t fake it or follow trends. People will feel it if you 100% love what you are doing and they can always sense if you’re faking it.
7 - How has music influenced your view of the world? Which moment has changed your musical life the most?
Giles Robson:Music has introduced me to people of all races, nationalities, religions and backgrounds across the world. It’s made me release we are all essentially the same and made me a lover of humankind and community. There’s not been one moment thats changed my musical life - more like a whole series of events over the years.
8 - How would you describe your sound and repertoire? What keeps a musician passionate about the blues over the years?
Giles Robson:I’m strictly a twelve bar blues artist who works within those three chords and it NEVER seems to get boring. As you get older you just hear and learn more about th music as you gain new experiences and perspectives.
9 - What do you do to keep your music relevant, develop it, and present it to the new generation?
Giles Robson:You shouldn’t try hard to consciously relevant. You should just try and play and sing your own phrases and lyrics and it will naturally sound of the time.
10 - 5 - Are there specific memories or highlights from your career that you would like to share with us?
Giles Robson:There are too many to share - I’m just very grateful to have had the opportunity to have been able to create them!
1 - Can we Also expect to be in the Netherlands in 2026 to promote your CD/LP?
Giles Robson:Yes I hope so - I will be looking for intimate venues of about 40 - 60 capacity to play in.
