Will Johns – On Top Of The World
Het helpt als je als muzikant afstamt van een familie die al behoorlijk wat heeft betekend in de muziek. Vader Andy Johns was geluidstechnicus, die samen heeft gewerkt met Rolling Stones en Eric Clapton. Moeder Paula Boyd is de zus van Pattie Boyd, waardoor Eric Clapton, George Harrison en Mick Fleetwood zijn ooms zijn. Een andere oom, Glyn Johns, is producer voor o.m. the Who, Led Zeppelin, Clapton, Steve Miller. Mocht dat de enige verdienste zijn voor Will Johns dan zou ik geen stukje tekst aan hem hebben gewijd, maar gelukkig kan de goede man zelf ook nog wat. De uit het Britse Bristol stammende Johns is daarnaast nog een uitstekende gitarist en zanger, die inmiddels een behoorlijke carrière heeft weten op te bouwen. Na jarenlang als veelgezocht sessiemuzikant te hebben gewerkt en in diverse bands te hebben gespeeld verscheen in 2013 zijn eerste soloalbum ‘Hooks & Lines’.
Na vijf succesvolle albums, optredens over de hele wereld met artiesten als oom Clapton, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Wood en Roger Waters om er maar een paar te noemen verschijnt nu zijn zesde album, getiteld ‘On Top Of The World’. De inspiratie voor de titel was een reis rond de wereld en de hoesfoto is genomen op een bergtop in Guatemala. Op het album staan tien nummers, waarvan vier door Johns zelf zijn geschreven. De overige zes zijn fraaie covers in een geheel eigen uitvoering. Hoewel hij van oorsprong een bluesgitarist is, is Johns niet bang om over de rand van zijn bordje te kijken. De basis van het album is onmiskenbaar blues en invloeden uit India en Rusland, van soul en funk weten het geheel op een hoger plan te brengen. Het begin wordt gevormd door de aloude, in 1930 door de Mississippi Sheiks opgenomen, ‘Sitting On Top Of The World’. Andere covers onder meer zijn Muddy Waters’ ‘Mannish Boy’ en het met Tomiko Dixon gezongen ‘Spoonful’, dat door haar opa Willie Dixon is geschreven. Bijzonder zijn ‘Move It’ met de Indiase zangeres Amritha Rajan, die zich heeft gespecialiseerd in de zogenaamd carnatische zangstijl uit Zuid-India, en ‘On My Back’ met medewerking van Onye, een Russische folkband. De medewerking van beiden geeft de nummers een interessante laag. Andere nummers die een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn het vlotte ‘Moondog’, waar Will’s zoon Charlie zijn debuut maakt, en het funky ‘The Last Time’ met vlijmscherp gitaarwerk van Will.
Mede door de invloeden van andere muzikale stijlen is ‘On Top Of The World’ naar mijn mening een topalbum geworden. Grote klasse.

It helps if, as a musician, you descend from a family that has already meant quite a lot to the music world. Father Andy Johns was a sound engineer who worked with the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. Mother Paula Boyd is the sister of Pattie Boyd, making Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Mick Fleetwood his uncles. Another uncle, Glyn Johns, is a producer for The Who, Led Zeppelin, Clapton, and Steve Miller, among others. If that were Will Johns' only achievement, I wouldn't have dedicated a piece of text to him, but fortunately, the good man is capable of something himself as well. Johns, hailing from Bristol in the UK, is also an excellent guitarist and singer who has managed to build a considerable career. After years of working as a highly sought-after session musician and playing in various bands, his first solo album, ‘Hooks & Lines’, was released in 2013.
After five successful albums and performances all over the world with artists such as uncle Clapton, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Wood, and Roger Waters, to name just a few, his sixth album, titled ‘On Top Of The World’, is now being released. The inspiration for the title was a trip around the world, the cover photo was taken on a mountaintop in Guatemala. The album features ten tracks, four of which were written by Johns himself. The remaining six are beautiful covers adapted by Johns. Although originally a blues guitarist, Johns is not afraid to look beyond his usual boundaries. The foundation of the album is unmistakably blues, and influences from India and Russia, soul and funk manage to elevate the whole to a higher level. It opens with the timeless ‘Sitting On Top Of The World’, recorded in 1930 by the Mississippi Sheiks. Other covers include Muddy Waters’ ‘Mannish Boy’ and ‘Spoonful’, sung with Tomiko Dixon, which was written by her grandfather Willie Dixon. Particularly noteworthy are ‘Move It’ featuring Indian singer Amritha Rajan, who specializes in the so-called Carnatic vocal style from South India, and ‘On My Back’, featuring the collaboration of Onye, a Russian folk band. The collaboration of both lends the songs an interesting dimension. Other tracks deserving special mention are the upbeat ‘Moondog’, on which Will’s son Charlie makes his debut, and the funky ‘The Last Time’, featuring razor-sharp guitar work by Will.
Partly due to the influences of other musical styles, ‘On Top Of The World’ has, in my opinion, become a top-notch album. Pure class.
