Even the opener, „Since I Met You,“ is a great, catchy song: fluid and smooth, yet powerful and driving, with a melodic guitar solo and a wonderful, surprising final chord – and it immediately leaves you wanting more!
But all the other songs are also so compelling in their versatility and quality that you‘d love to listen to them again immediately – not least because Webster gives the album a gripping dramatic structure in both the selection and the sequence of tracks.
The airy, rocking opener is followed by a powerful heavy blues rocker as the second track. Powerful and with a palpable groove, „The Bitch Has Gone“ quickly develops into a true highlight. Striking guitar riffs combine with the driving sounds of the Hammond organ to create an ever-building wall of sound. This song is more than just an exclamation mark!
The keyboards – from warm, earthy Hammond B3 sounds to soulful piano playing – effortlessly carry Sean Webster‘s guitar playing and his raw, powerful voice throughout the album. Axel Zwinselman has a keen ear for the right sounds and always sets precisely the right accents, for example in the wonderful ballad „Always Gone.“ Although the keys are present in all the tracks, they never push themselves to the forefront. Overall, this makes the album feel wonderfully cohesive.
The excellent production also contributes significantly to this impression – Sean Webster handled it himself at Superfly Studios in England, giving the album its own unique sonic framework. Supported by Floris Poesse on bass, Rob van der Linde on drums, and Kim and Mia Webster on backing vocals, a warm, organic band sound emerges that feels timeless and allows the songs to breathe naturally.
In „Light Of Day,“ the title track, he gives the guitar licks that run through the song a slightly reverberant sound, which lends the piece, with its subtle, dignified gospel touch, a wonderful spatial depth. „Light Of Day“ is perfected by the solo, with which Webster practically shines at the end of the track. Divine!
“Love’s A Ghost” shines with a laid-back Americana flair, while “I’m Not Going” is the classic blues-rock number – in the style of the songs with which Webster has made a name for himself over the last 20 years. Both are clearly top-notch.
One of the standout tracks among the many gems of this album is certainly “War & Poverty.” A compositionally strong rock number that unites everything that makes Webster’s songs what they are and almost feels like the essence of the entire album.
To close the album, Webster shines with a completely unexpected acoustic number – an adaptation of Richard Marx’s “Your Eyes on Me.” Webster on classical guitar, accompanied by Zwinselman on piano, puts the Briton’s distinctive, raspy voice squarely in the spotlight. The result is the most intimate moment on the album and a worthy epilogue to a magnificent, timeless work.
