Co-produced with Grammy-award winning drummer, David Teegarden, Jr., the album is 50 years in the making
Gold, a new album from Tulsa sound pioneer Don White, is available on all major streaming platforms Friday, October 3. Produced by White with David Teegarden, Sr., a Grammy-award winning musician known for his work with Bob Seger, JJ Cale, Eric Clapton and Joe Walsh, the record was born out of a recording session that started 50 years ago.
The album’s fifteen tracks feature White on vocals and guitar, joined by a veritable “who’s who” of the Tulsa Sound, musicians like Mike “Monk” Bruce (electric, acoustic guitar) Casey Van Beek (bass), Tommy Tripplehorn (electric guitar), Debbie Campbell (vocals), Steve Pryor (electric guitar), and Jim Byfield (backing vocals).
While the first songs were recorded decades ago, the burgeoning careers of the individual artists, including Teegarden’s own gig with Bob Seger, meant the project was placed on the back burner, where it stayed until White rediscovered it close to half a century later.

“This ‘new’ record is actually an ‘old’ record we started on a two-track, reel-to-reel tape recorder,” says White. “We started working on it, putting it together. We had enough songs where we were planning on making it a record, and then we all went different ways. Years went by, and I was cleaning out a closet, and I found it! I called Teegarden, and I said, ‘I think we ought to figure out if we can do something with that.’”
Despite the years, quality doesn’t go out of style. Solid songwriting and outstanding musicianship have no expiration date, and Gold is proof of that.
White’s style of country blues was developed through the years of writing, recording and performing. During his long career, he has performed as a solo act and with his own band in concert with Waylon Jennings, J.J. Cale, Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson, Don Williams, George Strait, Gus Hardin, Delbert McClinton, Toby Keith, David Allen Coe, Merle Haggard, Ry Cooder and others. A songwriter’s songwriter, White’s original songs have been recorded by artists like Rosanne Cash, The Oak Ridge Boys, and Suzy Boggus,.
Characterized by its laid-back, blues- and country-influenced style of rock and roll, the Tulsa Sound emerged in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Closely associated with musicians like Leon Russell and J.J. Cale, the music’s distinctive groove, understated vocals, and fluid guitar work influenced many major artists, including Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, and Neil Young.
