Antone’s 50th Presents Chicago Bound: Honoring Muddy, Cliff & Blue celebrates 50 years of Antone’s history while setting the stage for what comes next. In what Hal Horowitz (Blues Music Magazine) calls "another quality accolade to the man and the club that birthed, and was the home to, so many blues greats," this album features members of the Antone’s extended musical family including John Primer, Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Lavelle White, Anson Funderburgh, Billy Gibbons and the BFGs, Ivan Neville & CC Adcock with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, Doyle Bramhall II, Lurrie Bell and a busload of other unforgettable musicians by way of Blues Till 2 Recording Co. / Select-O-Hits.
Today we’re pleased to share the album's second single, a song drawn from the classic catalog of one of its three honorees, the great Bobby “Blue” Bland. “I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)” finds powerful Houston-based singer Kam Franklin fronting a Memphis-flavored band led by Bland’s son/drummer Rodd Bland and featuring Bobby’s own four-piece horn section, Bo-Keys bassist/producer Scott Bomar and Hi Rhythm Section keyboardist Archie “Hubbie” Turner. Rodd remembers this song as one of his all-time favorites, both on the household record player and on his dad's live shows. Originally released in 1974, the song was eventually replaced in Bland's sets by newer material, only to reappear in 1998 and remain a staple, often the closer, in his live shows.
Kam Franklin is an award-winning, multi-faceted artist whose fast-rising career has won her a grant from the Houston Arts Alliance and taken her to worldwide festival stages and all the major late-night tv shows. She is thrilled to be a new member of the Antone’s musical family. "It feels like a surreal dream, where I just get to show up, sing, and watch magical things occur around me. I never know what old school or new school legend is going to show up, and every time we come together as a collective, it's unlike anything I've experienced before."
Rodd Bland comes from blues royalty, a multi award-winning drummer who is always busy with his own band and other high-profile projects, but his ties to Antone’s remain close to his heart. Rodd expresses himself: “From running around Antone's as a child to later gracing its stage on drums with my father, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and now being part of its enduring legacy, this is truly a full-circle moment and a blessing. I'm honored to be part of the Antone's House Band and family, and grateful to contribute to a place that means so much to my family and me.”
The Chicago Bound album cover shows a lively, Chicago-bound tour bus packed with musicians racing to the next gig, illustrated by longtime club illustrator Diana Ray. Fittingly, album co-producer Zach Ernst conceived the project the night John Primer recorded a duo version of Jimmy Rogers’s classic “Chicago Bound.” As Ernst explains: “Beyond the song’s deeper meaning—the journey through music cities by African-American artists seeking a better life and better pay than they could find in the South at the time—a ‘road trip record’ or ‘truck stop cassette’ felt like a creative way for Antone’s to honor the great musicians who live on the road. It also traces a spiritual route from central Louisiana, home of Clifton Chenier’s music, through Houston, Austin, Memphis, and on to Chicago.”
The album's first single, "Hangin' On A Cliff," is a raw Texas blues original written by Billy F Gibbons specifically for this record that was premiered in RELIX MAGAZINE July 17.
Live-to-tape recordings produced by Jacob Sciba and Zach Ernst include tracks by blues heavyweights John Primer, Doyle Bramhall II, Kim Wilson & The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Anson Funderburgh, Lurrie Bell, and Lavelle White. Another highlight is a Clifton Chenier deep cut led by Louisiana torchbearers Ivan Neville and CC Adcock with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, featuring Jimmie Vaughan on harmonica. A walloping shuffle in the works since the Rolling Stones contributed to the LP A Tribute to the King of Zydeco last year, the song was made complete by Jimmie Vaughan’s ace harmonica playing, a secret weapon that Austin’s reigning king of the Stratocaster has kept close to the vest for most of his professional career.
The breadth of talent found across the album is a testament to the enduring legacy of Austin's Home of the Blues and its beloved founder Clifford Antone, who passed away in June of 2006.
