Despite his enormous talent, Mick Pini never achieved superstar status, unlike some of his contemporaries. He remained relatively unknown to the general public, while his colleagues spoke highly of him. Eric Clapton, for example, called him the only legitimate successor to Peter Green. The guitarist from Leicester, England, has been living in Germany for quite some time. Although he started at the age of fifteen and has been involved with various bands over the years, he was only really discovered relatively late. And that by Mike Vernon, with whom he has recorded three albums. In his 58-year career, he has recorded 25 albums and has worked with artists such as B.B. King and has opened for Buddy Guy, Jimmy Rogers and Freddie King, to name but a few.
Mick Pini's 26th album, "Papa Voodoo", was recently released, the third in collaboration with Audio 54. Audio 54 is in fact Craig Marshall, who also comes from Leicester, and is both a musician and a producer. The duo has been working together since Pini's 55th anniversary CD "Back Track" in 2021. After that, another album and two EPs were released. The collaboration between the two produces a special mix of so-called ambient, electronic accompaniment and Pini's blues guitar. A mix that apparently works very well. The album contains fourteen original songs, which vary in style from blues, rock, soul, reggae and funk. Songs that deserve a special mention in my opinion include the title track "Papa Voodoo", a song that is reminiscent of the New Orleans style of someone like Dr. John, the jazzy "Gotta Get My Way Home", the swinging instrumental "Make It Last" and the beautiful blues "Blues For Peter Green". A fine album, on which there is again a lot to enjoy.
