Release: Lone 6 - Isolated Heroes

Lone 6- Isolated Heroes (Walk in the Park Records/Concerto).  Op 23 juni verschijnt Isolated Heroes, het nieuwe album van LONE. Creatieve partners Ferdinand Bakker en Michel van Dijk werkten de afgelopen jaren met succes aan een eigen spannende soundmix van blues, soul, rock en roots...............

 Op Isolated Heroes resulteert deze zoektocht in een verzameling sfeervolle nieuwe composities waarin de verschillende muzikale stijlen en invloeden worden verkend en de lat onverminderd hoog ligt. Isolated Heroes is vanaf 23 juni beschikbaar op cd/digitaal en komt later dit jaar op vinyl uit (Walk in the Park Records/Concerto). 

Het album wordt op 2 juni voorafgegaan door het rootsy 'Wait For Me'.

Zanger Michel van Dijk en gitarist/producer Ferdinand Bakker kennen elkaar uit de begindagen van de succesvolle rockband Alquin en maken sinds 2011 samen muziek onder de naam LONE. Beiden zijn ondertussen de 70 gepasseerd maar de

inspiratie en daarmee de productiviteit lijken alleen maar toe te nemen. Daarbij staan aut

onomie en kwaliteitsbewaking vanaf dag 1 hoog in het vaandel. “Door volledig op eigen kompas te sturen komen er steeds weer nieuwe ideeën bovendrijven", zegt Bakk

er. “Voor ons is het altijd heel belangrijk geweest een volstrekt autonome positie te behouden en te beschermen. Alleen dan kun je kritisch blijven en je eigen normen waarborgen”.

Isolated Heroes is het zesde LONE album. Wat opvalt is dat de arrangementen, meer nog dan op vorige albums, op de inhoud zijn toegespitst. “De teksten gaan over voortschrijdend inzicht, over acceptatie. Observaties, met humor maar ook compassie die, vertaald naar een song hun meerwaarde krijgen als de muziekstijl de emotie weerspiegelt” licht Bakker toe, “maar dan wel zonder hoogdravend te worden, het blijft wel rock ‘n’ roll hè”. Bakker en Van Dijk verpakken hun overpeinzingen in 11 originele composities waarin hun beider indrukwekkende muziekverleden doorklinkt.

De albumtitel verwijst naar de wilskracht, de autonomie maar soms ook de eenzaamheid van een kunstenaar bij het ontstaan van zijn of haar creatie. Het album is hiermee een eerbetoon aan alle kunstenaars, of het nu dichters, beeldhouwers, schrijvers of filmers zijn; stuk voor stuk zijn het 'isolated heroes’. In dit licht zette Ferdinand Bakker zijn favoriete tekst Stop All the Clocks (Funeral Blues), van W.H. Auden op muziek. Luister hier naar Stop All the Clocks

Op maandag 26 juni viert LONE de release van hun nieuwe album Isolated Heroes met een akoestisch optreden in de bovenzaal van Poppodium Boerderij in Zoetermeer.

Michel van Dijk en Ferdinand Bakker zullen, bijgestaan door hun vaste bassist Mischa Kool, een aantal nummers van het nieuwe album live spelen. Schrijver/popjournalist Constant Meijers is gevraagd de totstandkoming van Isolated Heroes kort toe te lichten.

 The creative team of Ferdinand Bakker and Michel van Dijk continues to blaze a musical trail that has only deepened and become clearer with age.

 Both men began making their mark on the Dutch musical scene while they were still in their teens. They found their proper outlet in the 70ties when they both played in the band called Alquin, which stormed the local charts for the next six years until the popular group disbanded.

 Bakker and van Dijk came back together in 2003 to register a second stint as Alquin, a project that lasted into 2010.

 When Alquin broke up again for good, the two creative partners stayed together to form a musical unit called LONE, releasing five albums in preparation for this, their sixth long-playing project in the past decade.

 The two work together to flesh out each number, with Bakker playing virtually all the instruments and van Dijk singing the completed songs with great feeling.

 The 6^th LONE album starts a tune titled “Save Me” that opens with a terrific couplet:

 

• My neck is cramped, my knees don’t work,
• my trusty roller wheels they squeak 
• The doc subscribes me pills and cures,
• but I keep feeling weak

The verse continues in the next stanza: 

• Oh you poor and suffering earth
• What have we done to you
• This world full of color
• Why should we paint it blue?

           

The hits keep on coming with the second selection called “Straight from Heaven,” where they describe their object of affection: 

• There is something about her
• Call it mystic if you like 
• There is something special about her
• Like if the sun would shine all night 

 I could pull quotes from the songs for the rest of the day, but let these lines from a song called ”Lost Myself” suffice: 

• Lost myself in drug abuse
• I lost myself in love
• I lost myself in wanting things
• I would never have

 For the year 2023 this is some really great work, and it builds from song to song with no loss of quality, charm, nor—dare I say it— intelligence.

 Dig in, if you will, and you’ll find your listening time rewarded with a great program of original compositions sung by Michel van Dijk with verve and grace, playing against the all-encompassing sound created by Bakker’s multi-instrumental prowess. Good stuff from start to finish!
