Nick Fletcher – The Cloud Of Unknowing

Hoewel zijn collega-muzikanten hem waarderen en weten te vinden wanneer ze hem nodig hebben, wordt gitarist  Nick Fletcher betiteld als “the best kept secret in British Prog”. En dat terwijl hij zo’n veertig jaar muziek maakt en componeert. Op zijn twaalfde leerde hij gitaar spelen en hij liet zich beïnvloeden door artiesten als Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Jan Akkerman en Andrés Segovia. Fletcher studeerde drie jaar aan de Huddersfield School Of Music en speelde in diverse bands, waaronder die van progrock meester John Hackett. Daarnaast heeft hij zich geconcentreerd op het spelen van klassiek gitaar. Ook heeft hij een serie eigen albums uitgebracht.

 Op zijn nieuwe album”The Cloud Of Unknowing” wordt Nick begeleid door Caroline Bonnett (toetsen), Dave Bainbridge (toetsen), Russ Wilson (drums), Tim Harries (bas) en Stuart Barbour (zang). De achterliggende gedacht van dit album kwam voort uit de ellendige lockdown, die de wereld (hopelijk) achter de rug heeft. In een interview beschrijft Nick het als de wijze waarop de wereld te maken heeft gehad met de onverwachte gebeurtenissen en veranderingen die de pandemie heeft veroorzaakt. Hij noemt Dante’s “Inferno”, christelijke mystiek en spiritualiteit als inspiratiebron. Halverwege het album vormen vijf nummer de “Scenes From The Subconsious Mind – Suite”, beginnend met soundbites van paniek op straat getiteld “We Need To Leave This Place… Right Now!”, gevolgd door vier nummers progrock van het allerhoogste niveau. Fletcher wordt door collega’s en publiek gezien als een van de beste gitaristen in dit genre en hier bewijst hij duidelijk dat dit niet voor niets is. De man heeft het allemaal in zijn vingers, variërend van bedachtzame, klassieke stukken tot snoeiharde, razendsnelle progrock. En overal passend in de muziekstukken. Bijzonder indrukwekkend zijn het haast spirituele  “The Cloud Of Unknowing part 1, part 2, part3” en “The Paradox part 1, part 2”, over de paradox van verandering of hetzelfde blijven. Iets om over na te denken. Een absoluut topalbum, virtuoos gemaakt en van uitzonderlijke klasse.

The thinking behind this album came from the miserable lockdown, which the we (hopefully) have behind us. In an interview, Nick describes it as the way the world has dealt with the unexpected events and changes the pandemic has caused. He cites Dante's "Inferno", Christian mysticism and spirituality as a source of inspiration. Midway through the album, five tracks make up the “Scenes From The Subconsious Mind – Suite”, beginning with street panic sound bites entitled “We Need To Leave This Place… Right Now!”, followed by four tracks of top-notch prog rock. Fletcher is regarded by colleagues and the public as one of the best guitarists in this genre and here he clearly proves that this is not for nothing. The man has it all in his fingers, ranging from thoughtful, classical pieces to hard-hitting, lightning-fast prog rock. And fitting everywhere in the music pieces. Particularly impressive are the almost spiritual “The Cloud Of Unknowing part 1, part 2, part 3” and “The Paradox part 1, part 2”, about the paradox of change or staying the same. Something to think about. An absolute top album, masterfully made and of exceptional high class.
