Mike Morgan & The Crawl – The Lights Went Out In Dallas

Mike Morgan, wie was dat ook weer? Lang geleden dat we van hem hebben gehoord. Inderdaad, zijn laatste album kwam uit in 2008. Daarna had de Texaan even genoeg van toeren en het gedoe er omheen. Hij werd handelaar in motoren. In 2018 besloot hij zich toch weer aan de muziek te wijden, sloot zijn motorzaak en eenmaal op stoom sloeg corona toe. Soms zit het mee, soms niet…

Fast forward vier jaar. Morgan heeft de tijd goed gebruikt, is gaan schrijven en oefenen en nu is eindelijk zijn nieuwe album “The Lights Went Out In Dallas” verschenen. Hierop vinden we dertien nummers, waarvan tien eigen composities. Hij wordt bijgestaan door bassist Drew Allain, die al eerder deel uitmaakte van The Crawl. Nieuw is drummer Kevin Schermerhorn. Verder doen nog een negental bevriende muzikanten mee, waaronder gitarist Anson Funderburgh, die mede voor de productie verantwoordelijk is, pianist en gitarist Shawn Pittman en organist Mike Flannigan. Meteen bij de eerste twee nummers, de Jerry McCain cover “Ding Dong Daddy” met een prachtige solo van Funderburgh, en het soulvolle “Please Accept My Love” is het duidelijk dat Morgan het nog niet verleerd is. Andere nummers die het m.i. waard zijn om te worden genoemd zijn het funky “Funkafacation”, Morgans ode aan Louisiana-legende Lazy Lester in het gelijknamige nummer, en Joe Claytons “Goin’ Down To Eli’s”, dat we voornamelijk van Robert Nighthawk kennen. Een prima comeback van Mike Morgan.

 Mike Morgan, who was that again? Long time since we heard from him. Indeed, his last album was released in 2008. After that, the Texan had had enough of touring and the hassle around it. He became a motorcycle dealer. In 2018 he decided to dedicate himself to music again, closed his motorcycle shop and once it got running, corona struck. Sometimes life works, sometimes it doesn't… 

Fast forward four years. Morgan has used the time well, went writing and practicing and now his new album “The Lights Went Out In Dallas” has finally been released. On it we find thirteen songs, ten of which are own compositions. He is assisted by bassist Drew Allain, who was previously part of The Crawl. New is drummer Kevin Schermerhorn. Nine other musicians are also participating, including guitarist Anson Funderburgh, who is jointly responsible for the production, pianist and guitarist Shawn Pittman and organist Mike Flannigan. Right from the first two tracks, the Jerry McCain cover “Ding Dong Daddy” with a beautiful solo by Funderburgh, and the soulful “Please Accept My Love” it's clear that Morgan hasn't forgotten his trade yet. Other songs that I think are worth to be mentioned are the funky "Funkafacation", Morgan's ode to Louisiana legend Lazy Lester in the song of the same name, and Joe Clayton's "Goin' Down To Eli's", which we mainly know from Robert Nighthawk. A great comeback from Mike Morgan.
