Sylvie Lewis’ first album release since 2015, Lives Wisely is a collection of songs written in an arc spanning pre-motherhood in Italy and ending in post-pandemic Britain.
During that time Sylvie lost dear friend and long-time producer Richard Swift and was unsure where to turn to make this record. Fortunately she’d met Jonah Tolchin in Brighton while he was on tour with mutual friend Dawn Landes. While noticing he was giving guitar lessons during the pandemic, they were a non-possibility for Sylvie at the time as she was home alone with her 3-year-old son. However, when the pandemic began to blow over and some old routines resumed, she reached out to Jonah to get lessons and the pair quickly decided to work together.
Jonah then pulled Joe Harvey-Whyte on board as co-producer who would be present in Karma Studios in London, while Jonah maintained a virtual presence from his New Jersey base during the sessions.
Sylvie has been writing songs for a long time, to learn and improve, both at the craft of writing and at living. She has also co-written extensively, a habit she began back in Nashville.
The first single from the album, ‘Call Me When it Rains (Mike's Song)’ and accompanying video, is available now, the seasonally appropriate second single ‘More Lies Than Christmas’, is out today (December 19) with third and final single, ‘You Give Silence a Bad Name’, following on January 16.
Sylvie will be playing UK dates in April and May as band member and opening for Astrid Williamson - see tour itinerary below.
Bio
Sylvie Lewis discovered her passion for music early on, inspired by the rich stories and lyrics of jazz standards and musicals. A pivotal moment in her musical journey came at fourteen when she recorded songs with Sir George Martin, who emphasized the importance of melody in songwriting. This advice shaped her career and led her to explore various genres and refine her craft.
Although she initially pursued jazz at Berklee College of Music, Sylvie soon realized her true calling was in songwriting. Her talent for lyricism and melody led her to collaborate with notable figures such as Bob Ezrin and Richard Swift. Together with Swift, she produced her first album, Tangos and Tantrums, followed by three more albums. Sylvie's dedication to her craft saw her touring extensively, performing anywhere she could, and gaining a reputation for her heartfelt, authentic music.
Sylvie's career highlights include her time with L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, the Italian multi-ethnic world music ensemble that toured globally and won a David di Donatello award. She also collaborated with Sondre Lerche on the soundtrack for “The Sleepwalker” and co-wrote songs with Norwegian pop star Marit Larsen. Her music has been featured on "Grey’s Anatomy" and films including "Barney’s Version" and Gabriele Muccino’s “L’ultimo bacio”.
After years of living and creating in Rome, Sylvie returned to the UK, where she continued to evolve her sound. Her latest album, Lives Wisely, produced by Jonah Tolchin, marks a significant return to recording and showcases her growth as an artist. Sylvie has shared stages with artists such as Jesse Winchester, Dawn Landes and Anais Mitchell, and she continues to captivate audiences with her storytelling and melodic prowess.
