Sass Jordan – Bitches Blues

Sass Jordan is een Brummie (geboren in het Engelse Birmingham), maar woont al zo lang in Canada dat zij als Canadese beschouwd kan worden. Van 1988 tot 2011 heeft zij zeven albums uitgebracht en dit heeft haar geen windeieren gelegd. Zij heeft met onder meer Joe Cocker samengewerkt (hun duet is te horen in de film The Bodyguard) en heeft het podium gedeeld met Aerosmith, Van Halen en Alice Cooper. In 2017 nam zij “Racine”, het album waarmee zij 25 haar eerder doorbrak opnieuw op als “Racine Revisited”, drie jaar later gevolgd door het alom gewaardeerde “Rebel Moon Blues”.

En onlangs is “Bitches Blues” verschenen met daarop drie eigen nummers en vijf covers. Begeleid wordt zij door gitaristen Chris Caddell en Jimmy Reid, drummer Cass Pereira, toetsenspeler Jesse O’Brien en Steve Marriner op bas en harmonica. Een uitstekende band, die Sass Jordan op adequate wijze ondersteun. Vocaal is zij nog steeds zoals we haar kennen: rauw, ruig, hees en fluisterend waar nodig. Toch wil zij naar mijn mening teveel lijken op zwarte blueszangeressen, waardoor het m.i. allemaal te geforceerd klinkt. Het album begint met gedragen orgelklanken voordat het stevig rockend losbarst in het door Rick Derringer geschreven “Still Alive And Well”. Dit wordt gevolgd door Taj Mahals “Chevrolet”, een rustige blues met fraai dobrospel van Caddell. Fraai zijn ook het zelfgeschreven “Still The World Goes Round” en de welbekende blues “You Gotta Move”. Ook de afsluiter, de eigen compositie “Change Is Coming” verdient een extra vermelding. Kennelijk heeft Jordan vertrouwen in de toekomst. Leuke plaat, met een wat meer gedoseerde zang had het volgens mij nog wat beter overgekomen.

And recently “Bitches Blues” was released with three original songs and five covers. She is accompanied by guitarists Chris Caddell and Jimmy Reid, drummer Cass Pereira, keyboardist Jesse O'Brien and Steve Marriner on bass and harmonica. An excellent band, who support Sass Jordan in an adequate way. Vocally she is still top: raw, rough, hoarse and whispering where necessary. The album starts with worn organ sounds before it bursts out rocking in Rick Derringer's “Still Alive And Well”. This is followed by Taj Mahal's “Chevrolet”, a calm blues with beautiful dobro playing by Caddell. FGraai are also the self-written “Still The World Goes Round” and the well-known blues “You Gotta Move”. Also the closing track, the own composition “Change Is Cioming” deserves an extra mention. Apparently Jordan has faith in the future. Great record.
