 Zangeres Markey Blue en gitarist Ric Latina waren al jarenlang bezig met een eigen carrière toen zij elkaar in 2010 tegenkwamen. De uit Hemet, Californië afkomstige Jeannette Markey als Las Vegas showgirl, die heeft samengewerkt met artiesten uiteenlopend van Frank Sinatra en Bob Hope tot Candye Kane, Taj Mahal en Anson Funderburgh. Ric Latina komt van de andere kant van het land, namelijk Coventry, Rhode Island en is beïnvloed door onder meer B.B. King, Larry Carlton en Robben Ford. Hun ontmoeting leidde tot een samenwerkingsproject, een handvol cd’s, nominaties en prijzen en… o ja, een huwelijk.

Onlangs verscheen van het echtpaar het album “Jumpin’ The Broom”, een metafoor voor in het huwelijk treden, met tien door Markey en Latina zelfgeschreven nummers. Begeleid worden zij door toetsenist Shannon Wickline, sax- en fluitspeler Chris West, bassist Randy Coleman en percussionist Dave Northrup met als gasten Mark T. Jordan (toetsen) en Dana Robbins (saxofoon). Het in Nashville woonachtige stel laat op dit album duidelijk hun liefde voor de Memphis blues en soul horen. Het begint met “Bad For Real” een fraai bluesnummer en laveert door alle variaties van de Memphis-sound tot aan de ballad “Where Are You”, waarmee het album wordt afgesloten. Andere nummers die wat mij betreft een extra vermelding verdienen zijn het door de blazers opgestuwde “When It’s Blue”, de ballad “Lowdown Voodoo Woman” en het latin-achtige “Right Kind Of Woman” met een extra saxsolo van Dana Robbins. Prima album met lekker swingende Memphis blues.

 Singer Markey Blue and guitarist Ric Latina had been pursuing their own careers for years when they met in 2010. Hemet, California-born Jeannette Markey as a Las Vegas showgirl, who has collaborated with artists ranging from Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope to Candye Kane, Taj Mahal and Anson Funderburgh. Ric Latina hails from the other side of the country, namely Coventry, Rhode Island and is influenced by the likes of B.B. King, Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. Their meeting led to a collaborative project, a handful of CDs, nominations and awards and… oh yes, a marriage.

 Recently the couple released the album "Jumpin' The Broom", a metaphor for getting married, with ten songs written by Markey and Latina. They are accompanied by keyboardist Shannon Wickline, sax and flute player Chris West, bassist Randy Coleman and percussionist Dave Northrup with guests Mark T. Jordan (keys) and Dana Robbins (saxophone). The Nashville-based couple clearly shows their love for the Memphis blues and soul on this album. It starts with “Bad For Real” a beautiful blues song and navigates through all variations of the Memphis sound up to the ballad “Where Are You”, which closes the album. Other songs that deserve an extra mention in my opinion are "When It's Blue", the ballad "Lowdown Voodoo Woman" and the Latin-like "Right Kind Of Woman" with an extra sax solo by Dana Robbins. Great album with nice swinging Memphis blues.
