Dit jaar had hij honderd jaar oud geworden, deze Lowell Fulson. Deze Westcoast bluesman en schrijver van onvergetelijke klassiekers als “Reconsider Baby”, “Tramp” en “Three O’Clock Blues”. Hij had een carrière die begon in de veertiger jaren en zelfs in 1999, het jaar van zijn dood trad hij nog op. In 1983 trad Fulson op met de band van Jeff Dale in de fameuze Club 88 in Los Angeles. Voor de gelegenheid had Jeff zijn bandrecorder meegenomen en de tapes 38 jaar lang in een doos bewaard. Het thuiszitten door Covid-19 noopte hem kennelijk tot opruimen van zijn spullen, waarbij deze banden naar boven kwamen.

Na toestemming gekregen te hebben van de erven van Lowell Fulson en een crowdfundingsactie voor de financiën zijn nu een tiental nummers verschenen op het album “Lowell Fulson Live! With Jeff Dale & The Blue Wave Band”. Van de tien nummers zijn er zeven geschreven door Fulson. Nummers als “Too Many Drivers”, “Blues Pain” en uiteraard “Reconsider Baby” ontbreken hier natuurlijk niet. De geluidskwaliteit is niet het allerbeste dat ik ooit gehoord heb, maar gezien het feit dat het met een 4-track Tascam Portastudio, met een cassettebandje, is opgenomen valt het allemaal nog best mee. Daar tegenover staat dat het speelplezier ervan af spat en dat het album een eerlijke weergave is van een prachtig optreden. Een prima band achter de toen 62-jarige Fulson, die in goede vorm is, zorgt voor een mooi document. Prima album.

For the occasion, Jeff had brought his tape recorder and kept the tapes in a box for 38 years. Sitting at home due to Covid-19 apparently forced him to clean up his things, which brought these tires up.

 After receiving permission from the heirs of Lowell Fulson and a crowdfunding campaign for the finances, a dozen songs have now appeared on the album “Lowell Fulson Live! With Jeff Dale & The Blue Wave Band”. Of the ten songs, seven are written by Fulson. Songs like “Too Many Drivers”, “Blues Pain” and of course “Reconsider Baby” are of course not missing here. The sound quality isn't the best I've ever heard, but considering that it was recorded with a 4-track Tascam Portastudio, with a cassette tape, it's not that bad at all. On the other hand, the playing pleasure is exuberant and the album is an honest representation of a wonderful performance. A fine band behind the then 62-year-old Fulson, who is in good shape, makes for a nice document. A very fine album.
