Oma speelde boogiewoogie op feestjes en al op jonge leeftijd kreeg de in Talihina, Oklahoma in de Native-American Choctaw gemeenschap geboren Shawn pianoles. Later leerde hij drums en toen hij eenmaal een gitaar in handen kreeg en de muziek van Lightnin’ Hopkins en Muddy Waters ontdekte, was het hek helemaal van de dam. Al vroeg verhuisde hij naar Dallas, Texas, van waaruit hij nu de wereld rondtoert met zijn versie van de Texas Blues.
