Ruby James & Eddie Spaghetti Reimagine a Supersuckers Classic as a Heartbreaking Due
For most listeners, “Pretty Fucked Up” has always been a full-throttle rock and roll anthem. When Ruby James heard it, she heard something else entirely. What began as a straight cover in Ruby James’ live set slowly transformed into something unexpected. Sitting at a piano one afternoon, James slowed the song down and discovered the heartbreak buried beneath its bravado. Suddenly the lyrics revealed an entirely different story. What had once sounded like a barroom confession became a love letter from the other side of the conversation. The idea followed her for years.
After first discovering the Supersuckers aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise in 2020, James jokingly told frontman Eddie Spaghetti, “We’re gonna do something together someday.” At the time, she had no idea what that might be. The world soon shut down, life changed course, and the idea lingered in the background while James slowly found her way back to making music.
James had become a devoted believer in “the greatest rock and roll band in the world,” but it wasn’t until years later that the pieces began falling into place. As the arrangement evolved, so did the song itself. James shifted the perspective and began imagining the story from the other side of the heartbreak. What started as a reinterpretation slowly began taking on a life of its own.
The turning point came aboard the Underground Garage Cruise in 2025. During an impromptu late-night gathering, James sat down at the piano and began playing her reimagined version of the song. Eddie Spaghetti grabbed a bass. Supersuckers guitarist Marty Chandler joined on guitar. It was the first time Eddie had ever heard the song that way — while playing it alongside her.
The reaction was immediate. The next night, Eddie told a crowd he’d been playing the song for years but had never realized it could be a piano ballad until hearing James perform it.
That moment ultimately led to Austin, Texas, where James and Spaghetti joined forces to record the track as a duet. Produced by Eddie Spaghetti himself and featuring Supersuckers drummer Chris Von Streicher, the recording unites two-thirds of the greatest rock and roll band in the world while transforming one of its most beloved songs into something entirely new.
What emerged was neither a straightforward cover nor a traditional remake. “When I slowed this song down, it felt like there was still a chapter missing,” says James. “I became invested in the heartbreak I never knew was hiding inside this rock and roll anthem. So I started writing a bridge.”
That bridge became the moment “Pretty Fucked Up” transformed into “Punk Rock Love Song.”
“I started imagining the conversation inside the heartbreak between two people who had loved, struggled, and given it everything they had,” she says. “But in the end, they still might not make it. Anyone who has ever loved and lost knows a story like this.”
With a newly written bridge, a shifted perspective, and the unmistakable chemistry between James and Spaghetti’s voices, “Punk Rock Love Song” became a bruised, beautiful duet about love, damage, devotion, and survival.
Album producer Kyle Crusham immediately recognized the magic in the room. “Are you kidding me? This is perfect,” he told James. “You sound like a fucked up Kenny and Dolly.”
“Everybody else heard a full-throttle rock and roll anthem. All I could hear was longing and heartbreak,” says James. “Once I heard it that way, I couldn’t unhear it.”
More than anything, James credits Spaghetti’s unwavering support throughout the process.
“People say they’re going to do things all the time,” she says. “Most don’t. Eddie did. He showed up from the first time he heard the song all the way through making the record, the video, and helping bring this thing to life. He encouraged me to take chances, to write, and to trust my instincts. I’m incredibly grateful for what we made together.”
The result is Punk Rock Love Song: a reimagined duet born from friendship, mutual respect, and a shared belief that great songs still have secrets left to reveal.
