Recorded with a seasoned band of veteran musicians, Motormouth moves effortlessly between tight rhythmic punch and relaxed, soulful interplay - hallmarks of his evolving sound.
The album follows James’ 2024 release, Lessons, a tribute to the music of Delbert McClinton. While that record paid homage to one of his greatest influences, Motormouth places the focus back on James himself - showcasing the songwriting, musicianship, and personality that have made him one of the most respected voices in today’s roots music landscape.
With this latest release, he delivers a variety of American roots music. From the heavy- hitting grooves of the opening tracks to the soulful introspection of the album’s midpoint, James explores the complexities of love, loss, and the pursuit of a "brand new day."
The album opens with a defiant blues-rocker “Why Should I Suffer,” that questions the price of a broken relationship. James delivers a raw performance centered on a feeling of being framed for a "crime" he didn't commit: “I'm not guilty of that other fool’s crime / Only took what I thought was mine / Don't make me serve another man's time.” A centerpiece of the album, "I’m In Trouble" captures the electric, undeniable pull of a new attraction. It’s a bluesy acknowledgment that sometimes the best kind of trouble is the one you can’t walk away from. "I been dodging trouble for most of my life / But this kind of trouble is the kind I like." On "I Can’t Find Your Mind," James dives deep into the distance that can grow between two people even when they are physically close. This track features some of the album's most evocative metaphors for emotional detachment: “But you've been slipping away from me standing right here by my side / I can see every little step you take but I can't find your mind.”
The album reaches a climax of vulnerability with a rendition of "I Got To Know," a soul- stirring plea for honesty originally recorded by Don Bryant. It captures the restless anxiety of a man who needs to know where he stands: “Is there someone else on your mind / So tell me...Am I wasting my time?”
