In this previously unreleased single, Hubert tells the story of Howlin' Wolf's rocky return home from the road!
Bluesman Hubert Sumlin — Howlin Wolf’s incendiary, groundbreaking guitarist, idolized by the likes of Eric Clapton and Keith Richards — was ranked #47 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best guitarists of all time.
Hubert was also an enchanting storyteller, and he loved to recount tales of his life on the road with Howlin' Wolf. Hubert passed in 2011, but in 2006 he spent a few days with VizzTone's Richard Rosenblatt and collaborated on this song, based on a story he liked to tell about Howlin Wolf coming home from the road and encountering a jealous, shotgun-wielding wife. This recording features Hubert’s incomparable playing and singing, and also his storytelling, interwoven with the music.
This song was recorded in Rosenblatt's basement studio and features some of Boston's veteran blues players: Paul Lenart on guitar, Bill Mather on bass, and Rosenblatt on harmonica (for the mathematically inclined, that's 75% of the 11 Guys Quartet) plus Larry Luddecke on piano and Billy Conway on drums.
The single comprises two tracks: One with Hubert telling the story over the solo sections, one with no talking over the solos.
Rosenblatt notes: "I have been waiting 20 years to release this song — I hope you love it as much as I do!"
