Kid & Lisa Andersen from Little Village Kid Andersen -Spirits- & Lisa “Little Baby” Leuschner -Soul- Double Album Release
We tend to attribute the unexplainable to magic and there’s a lot of magic in music. You can analyze melody, harmony and rhythm – it’s all math, but there is more to music than formulas. There is an inner source of magic. The passion of the human spirit and that quality even more indefinable: soul. Then there are the sources of magic that come from outside the artist. The moment and the room – the time and space. All these factors combine to create the magic of music.
Much of the music that has defined each generation has come from the major studios in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville etc. But there have always been smaller studios outside of the mainstream, often run by a single owner/producer that does it their way and punches well above their weight. Every era has had them. Places where all the elements of magic seem to be magnetically drawn together in a perfect storm in an unexpected place. The artist, the equipment, the room, and the producer with the talent, taste, skills and love to foster magic.
Over the last decade and a half over 150 albums have emerged from a small studio in a suburb of San Jose, California. Greaseland USA is one of these magic hubs. Run by a couple who live and breathe music. Christoffer “Kid” Andersen and Lisa “Little Baby” Leuschner.
Kid is widely known in the blues world as a guitarist and producer -he and his catalog have been nominated for the Blues Music Awards dozens of times. Lisa is Greaseland’s not-so-secret weapon. Her voice can be heard on hundreds of recordings, -a versatile, but signature sound of the studio. They own the gear, but the inner source of the magic they bottle there is love. The love of the music, the artists, the huge community of musicians that are drawn to them, as they love each other. To watch them work together is witnessing telepathy.
Originally, Kid started the studio with a radio station’s discarded tape machine, so that he could record his own music. Gradually, all the pieces organically evolved into what has become Greaseland. He and Lisa have been nurturing magic and steering dozens of other artists to awards and rave reviews every year. At Little Village, we know first hand. The vast majority of the over sixty albums released on the label in the past 8 years have come through Greaseland for production, recording, mixing and/or mastering. We’ve been saying it forever and we’re not alone. It’s time to finally distill some pure Kid and Little Baby. We proudly present you Spirits and Soul.
