Als je een nieuwe plaat gaat maken, kom je als artiest voor de keuze te staan om de live-ervaring zo goed mogelijk vast te leggen of je juist volledig te storten op een studioproductie. Een muzikale tweesplitsing die, welke afslag je ook neemt, het hele maakproces zal beïnvloeden.
Paceshifters schreef hun muziek altijd vanuit een liveperspectief, maar besloot voor hun nieuwe album 'Out-and-Outer' juist voor de tegenovergestelde aanpak te kiezen. Een gedurfde keuze voor een band die al meer dan vijftien jaar aan de weg timmert en juist een fanbase opbouwde met hun liveshows. Die reputatie voerde ze langs plekken als Pinkpop, Zwarte Cross, Groezrock, SXSW en shows in de UK, Polen, Canada, Duitsland en Servië.
'Out-and-Outer' moest echt anders. Zonder concessies en door helemaal los te laten hoe de band het live zou neerzetten. De volledige focus op een album om thuis naar te luisteren. Samen met producer Pieterjan Coppejans werd zo de basis gelegd voor een gelaagde studioproductie die het net even anders doet. “Out-and-Outer is een album om vaker naar te luisteren. Er zit meer spanning in, maar die komt er na een paar luisterbeurten pas uit. We geven niet alles in één keer weg. Het is een plaat waarin je elke keer weer iets nieuws ontdekt”, zegt de band daarover.
De sound op het nieuwe album heeft stadionrockallure, maar flirt ook met shoegaze en postpunk. Openingstrack 'Aviator' is een anthem in de dop, zonder te vervallen in meezingkitsch. “Het nummer gaat over verandering. Je lievelingsplek in de natuur platgewalst zien worden om ruimte te maken voor een nieuwe snelweg, in een maatschappij waarin alles sneller moet gaan. Je vliegt over dit geliefde landschap heen en ziet hoe onder je alles verandert.”
De songs op 'Out-and-Outer' raken aan menselijk leed, klein en groot. Het zijn universele thema's waar iedereen, direct of indirect, mee te maken krijgt in het leven. Terugblikken naar toen, de tijd die je op de hielen zit, rouw en zelfdestructie.
Er wordt gezegd dat verandering de enige constante in het leven is en Paceshifters heeft die vergankelijkheid op 'Out-and-Outer' gevangen in een verzameling oprechte, doorvoelde songs die ondanks de productionele keuzes live nog steeds van het podium knallen.

Highway Of Tears: The song is about a highway in Canada where many native children have been missing since 1970. The neglect of canadian native children. The hunter and the hunted. On the highway of tears where you can't feel safe. You are being chased and it could just be your last day.
Where The Spirit Meets the Bone: From the surface, you can't see what's actually going on in someone's mind. A person who is actually not doing well but doesn't want to show it on the outside. Trying to be honest and discuss what is going on.
Runaway Child: A dark chapter in Canada's history. The residential schools that were set up in Canada from 1870 to 1990. The purpose of these schools was to take indigenous children away from their parents, taking away their culture. Many of these children disappeared and the school's response then was that they had run away. However, many mass graves have been found where hundreds of bodies have been found of these children.
Shape: androgynous. Hermaphroditic. You do not feel comfortable in your own body but at the same time you do not know what would be the appropriate body. Looking up to individuals who break this taboo and are who they would like to be.
Black Dog: Depression. Finding the strength to get out of bed in the morning. A shadow hanging over you. Feeling stuck in dark thoughts with no way out.
Sirens: A sick mind. You realize that you are sick and that the things you do cannot be done. But you can't help yourself. Someone who wants more of that which is not allowed without thinking about the consequences of their actions.
33: Dealing with loss and the passage of time. Missing a loved one and knowing that not a day is going to pass that you don't think about them.
