For her third album, Among The Insanity, fire breathing vocalist Skylar Rogers made great strides to step up her game. After overcoming several personal challenges in the wake of the pandemic, Rogers teamed up with vaunted producer and songwriter Terry Wilson, who brought in a team of
A-list studio players including Bennett Salvay, Billy Watts, Brannen Temple, Teresa James, Snuffy Walden, and Darrell Leonard to record a dozen new tracks that allow her to stretch out on an array of rockin’ blues, roots, and soul melodies.
The first of eleven tracks co-written by Rogers and Wilson, “Love In The Left Lane,” is a sizzling
R&B tune with a heavy beat that spells out her feminine power. The title tune ”Among The Insanity,” has a forward moving pulse with touches of reggae, and sharp lead guitar work that supports her sorrowful vocals detailing the aftermath of a broken relationship. The tender poem “One Last Kiss,” is set to an easy swing and beautiful harmonies that shield us from the sadness of the lyrics. You can hear the sparks cracklin’ and feel the heat as Rogers whips up her enticements on the sultry and swampy “Ride That Lightning,” and then shakes off her past on the spirited “Blame It On Rock & Roll.”
The piano driven “When It’s Broken,” is a sharp examination of matters of the heart. Rogers lays down the law on the good time honky-tonk rocker “Step It Up,” and the foot stomping “Both Sides Of The Tale,” is full of valuable life lessons. Rogers pleads with the protagonist of a complex love triangle on the dramatic and jazzy “Between Friends,” her words echoed by lonesome trumpet tones from Darrell Leonard. She preaches the blues to her sisters on the bumping shuffle “Femininity,” and sings the praises of her happy place and the rejuvenation to be found with the sand between your toes down at “The Water.” The expansive ballad, “Apology Not Accepted,” closes the set with Rogers reciting an oath of fierce determination to not be gaslighted or minimized and to stand up for one’s own truth. Those are giant steps on the path to self-actualization.
Every artist navigates a personal journey to complete their opus, but for Skylar Rogers Among The Insanity must have presented significant obstacles that required a leap of faith to overcome. Persistence prevailed to create an excellent third album. Rick J Bowen
