BarnOwlBlues | FB Eric Campfens Tot mijn grote spijt moet ik toegeven dat ik nooit eerder van de band Red Beans & Pepper Sauce had gehoord tot het nieuwste schijfje van hen op mijn deurmat belandde. Vooral omdat dit al hun zevende album is! |
De uit het Zuid-Franse Montpellier afkomstige zevental timmert al sinds dik tien jaar aan de weg en in hun thuisland hebben zij op de grootste festivals gestaan. Hoogste tijd om ook hier in Nederland aandacht aan hen te besteden. Wie weet lukt het met het nieuwe album.
De band bestaat uit Jessyka Aké (zang), Laurent Galichon (gitaar), Serge Auzier (toetsen), Pierre Cordier (bas), Niko Sarran (drums) en een blazerssectie, gevormd door Philippe Anicaux en Mathias Imbert. Onlangs is hun zevende album verschenen, dat simpelweg “7” is getiteld. Het is een dubbelalbum met op de eerste schijf acht door de band zelfgeschreven nummers, waarbij gitarist Galichon de dikste vinger in de pap had. Op schijfje twee staan drie nummers, die zijn opgenomen in de legendarische Rockfield Studios in Wales. Van de drie zijn er weer twee van Galichon en vinden we daarbij ook de enige cover, namelijk Led Zeppelins “Rock And Roll” in een zeer eigenzinnige versie. Muzikaal gezien is het duidelijk waardoor de band grotendeels is beïnvloed: de stevige bluesrock uit de zeventiger jaren. De ritmesectie houdt de boel strak en bouwt het fundament waar de overige bandleden hun werk kunnen opbvouwen. Gitarist Gallichon heeft duidelijk geluisterd naar Jimi Hendrix, terwijl toetsenist Auzier zorgt voor een geluid á la Deep Purple/Uriah Heep. Zangeres Aké is een geval apart, zij kan zowel fluisteren als brullen, heeft een flink bereik en ligt de nodige soul in haar stem. Bijzondere vermelding verdienen m.i. de stevig rockende “Gonna Dance” en “World Is Burning”, evenals het funky “Guess My Name”. Een absolute aanrader voor liefhebbers van de stevige bluesrock uit de zeventiger jaren.

To my great regret I have to admit that I had never heard of the band Red Beans & Pepper Sauce until their latest disc landed on my doorstep. Especially since this is already their seventh album! The seven-piece, from Montpellier in the south of France, have been working on the road for over ten years and in their homeland they have performed at the biggest festivals. It is high time to pay attention to them here in the Netherlands as well. Who knows, maybe it will work with the new album.
The band consists of Jessyka Aké (vocals), Laurent Galichon (guitar), Serge Auzier (keys), Pierre Cordier (bass), Niko Sarran (drums) and a horn section, formed by Philippe Anicaux and Mathias Imbert. Their seventh album has recently been released, which is simply titled “7”. It is a double album with eight self-written songs on the first disc, with guitarist Galichon having the biggest input. Disc two contains three songs, which were recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales. Of the three, two are again by Galichon and we also find the only cover, namely Led Zeppelin's “Rock And Roll” in a very idiosyncratic version. Musically it is clear what the band is largely influenced by: the solid blues rock from the seventies. The rhythm section keeps things tight and builds the foundation where the other band members can fold their work. Guitarist Gallichon has clearly listened to Jimi Hendrix, while keyboardist Auzier provides a sound á la Deep Purple/Uriah Heep. Singer Aké is a special case, she can whisper as well as roar, has a considerable range and has the necessary soul in her voice. In my opinion, the solid rocking “Gonna Dance” and “World Is Burning” deserve special mention, as well as the funky “Guess My Name”. An absolute must for fans of the solid blues rock from the seventies.
