Door zijn vorige albums, zijn optredens en het interview dat ik ooit met hem mocht hebben ben ik een fan geworden, en gebleven. Voor zijn recente album, zijn tiende inmiddels, heeft hij versterking gezocht – en gekregen – bij The Big Bottle Of Joy,

een Canadese achtpersoonsformatie. Deze band bestaat uit Mike Farrington Jr (bas), Chris Kirby (toetsen), Cory Tetford (gitaar), Reeny Smith (zang, B3), Geoff Arsenault (drums, percussie), Kim Dunn (toetsen), Micah Smith (zang) en Haliey Smith (zang).

 Het album, dat eenvoudigweg “Matt Andersen and the Big Bottle Of Joy” heet, bevat twaalf nummers, waarvan er negen door Andersen zijn geschreven al dan niet met input van anderen. Het is een steviger en ruiger album geworden dan wat we de laatste jaren van hem gewend zijn. Dat is meteen duidelijk bij het eerste nummer, het overweldigende “Let It Slide”, dat wordt gevolgd door de stevige blues “So Low, Solo”. Matt en band voeren de luisteraar langs southern rock-nummers als “How Far Will It Go”, gospel als “Hands On Time” en bluesrockers als “What’s On My Mind”. Andere nummers die een special vermelding verdienen zijn de soulblues “Only An Island” en het zeer fraaie door Terra Spencer geschreven “Aurora”. Muzikaal zit het allemaal prima in elkaar, het aanbod is gevarieerd en de teksten zijn het absoluut waard om te worden beluisterd. Luister maar een “So Low, Solo” over iemand die afglijdt naar de zelfkant van het leven, de openheid in een relatie in “What’s On My Mind” en over eenzaamheid in “Only An Island”. Een prachtig album, aanrader.

For his recent album, his tenth now, he sought - and received - reinforcement from The Big Bottle Of Joy, a Canadian eight-person formation. This band consists of Mike Farrington Jr (bass), Chris Kirby (keys), Cory Tetford (guitar), Reeny Smith (vocals, B3), Geoff Arsenault (drums, percussion), Kim Dunn (keys), Micah Smith (vocals) and Haliey Smith (vocals).

 The album, simply titled “Matt Andersen and the Big Bottle Of Joy,” contains twelve tracks, nine of which were written by Andersen with or without input from others. It has become a heavier and rougher album than what we have come to expect from him in recent years. That is immediately clear in the first song, the overwhelming “Let It Slide”, which is followed by the solid blues “So Low, Solo”. Matt and band take the listener through southern rock songs like "How Far Will It Go", gospel like "Hands On Time" and blues rockers like "What's On My Mind". Other songs that deserve a special mention are the soul blues “Only An Island” and the very beautiful “Aurora” written by Terra Spencer. Musically it is all well put together, the offering is varied and the lyrics are absolutely worth listening to. Just listen to a “So Low, Solo” about someone slipping into the seamy side of life, the openness in a relationship in “What’s On My Mind” and about loneliness in “Only An Island”. A wonderful album, highly recommended.
