Hij trad al op toen hij daar volgens de Amerikaanse wet nog te jong voor was en zijn eerste opnamen maakte hij met de band Mother’s Worry toen hij zestien jaar oud was. We zijn nu enkele decennia verder en Derrick heeft er vele duizenden uren op zowel podium als in de studio op zitten.

Zijn stem is te horen in reclamespots en zijn nummers zijn gebruikt in film en tv-series en ook door anderen opgenomen. In 2016 besloot hij een album onder eigen naam uit te brengen. “Why I Choose To Sing The Blues” werd alom goed ontvangen.

 Het heeft een paar jaar geduurd en nu is eindelijk Procells tweede album verschenen, getiteld “Hello Mojo!”. Hierop staan tien nummers, waarvan Procell er negen heeft geschreven. Vier met hulp van zijn oude schrijfpartner Terry Abrahamson en drie met Bob Trenchard, de baas van Catfood Records, waar het album is verschenen. De enige cover is “Who’ll Be The Next In Line” van de Kinks. De productie was in handen van Zac Harmon, die tevens op drie nummers gitaar speelt. De in Chicago woonachtige Procell zingt, speelt harmonica en piano en wordt begeleid door uitstekende muzikanten van het in El Paso gevestigde label. Labeleigenaar Trenchard speelt mee op bas, verder horen we Johnny McGhee (gitaar), Richy Puga (drums) en Dan Ferguson (toetsen). Muzikaal zitten we midden in de soulvolle blues. Derrick Procell zingt met een mooie diepe bariton. Muzikaal gezien zit het wel goed en ook wat teksten betreft is er voldoende te genieten. Luister maar eens naar “A Tall Glass Of You” en “The Contender”. Andere nummers die een speciale vermelding verdienen zijn “Skin In The Game” met een fraaie gitaarsolo van Zac Harmon, “Broken Promise”, waarin Procell zijn harmonicakunsten kan vertonen, en de gevoelige ballad “Color Of An Angel”. Van begin tot einde een plezier om naar te luisteren. Grote klasse.

Derrick Procell has been singing since he was a child. He performed when he was still too young according to American law and he made his first recordings with the band Mother's Worry when he was sixteen years old. We are now several decades further and Derrick has many thousands of hours on both stage and in the studio. His voice can be heard in commercials and his songs have been used in film and TV series and also recorded by others. In 2016 he decided to release an album under his own name. “Why I Choose To Sing The Blues” was widely well received.

Four with the help of his old writing partner Terry Abrahamson and three with Bob Trenchard, the boss of Catfood Records, where the album was released. The only cover is “Who’ll Be The Next In Line” by the Kinks. The production was in the hands of Zac Harmon, who also plays guitar on three songs. Chicago-based Procell sings, plays harmonica and piano and is backed by outstanding musicians from the El Paso-based label. Label owner Trenchard plays on bass, we also hear Johnny McGhee (guitar), Richy Puga (drums) and Dan Ferguson (keys). Musically we are in the middle of the soulful blues. Derrick Procell sings with a fine deep baritone. Musically it is fine and also in terms of lyrics there is plenty to enjoy. Just listen to “A Tall Glass Of You” and “The Contender”. Other songs that deserve a special mention are “Skin In The Game” with a beautiful guitar solo by Zac Harmon, “Broken Promise”, in which Procell can show his harmonica skills, and the sensitive ballad “Color Of An Angel”. A pleasure to listen to from start to finish. Great class.
