Things have moved quickly with Bywater Call. The band was founded in Toronto, Canada in 2017 by singer Meghan Parnell and guitarist Dave Barnes, who were joined by Bruce McCarthy (drums), Mike Meusel (bass) and Alan Zemaitis (keys). A year later Stephen Dyte (trumpet) and Julian Nalli (tenor sax) joined the company. They won the 2018 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search and at the end of 2019 their self-titled debut album was released, which was well received everywhere.

Now their second album has been released with the title “Remain”. Just like on their debut, all eleven songs are written by the band. The voice of Meghan Parnell is striking. The range is large and it is so strong and flexible that it radiates power without having to scream. The rest of the band are musicians who are well attuned to each other, who form a solid foundation and deliver a convincing mix of rock and soul blues. Guitarist Barnes is a master of the slide guitar, and Dyte and Nalli provide the soulful sound as horn section. The album starts solid with the rocking blues “Falls Away” and the band immediately shows their business card; the listener hears which direction it is going. From the same sheet a suit are “Go Alone” and “Left Behind”. Ballads like “Lover Down Slow” and “Fortune” provide the necessary variation and much-needed breathing space. A more than excellent album. If I were to keep annual lists, this one is certainly in the highest regions.
