Ondanks zijn enorme talent heeft Mick Pini nooit de supersterrenstatus bereikt, dit in tegenstelling tot een aantal van zijn generatiegenoten. Bij het grote publiek is hij redelijk onbekend gebleven, terwijl zijn collega’s hoog over hem opgaven. Eric Clapton heeft hem bijvoorbeeld de enige legitieme opvolger van Peter Green genoemd. De uit het Engelse Leicester komende gitarist woont alweer geruime tijd in Duitsland. Hoewel hij op zijn vijftiende begon en in de loop van de jaren met diverse bands bezig was werd hij pas vrij laat echt ontdekt. En dat dan weer wel door Mike Vernon, waarmee hij drie albums heeft opgenomen. In zijn 55-jarige carrière heeft hij 25 albums opgenomen en heeft hij samengewerkt met artiesten als B.B. King en geopend voor Buddy Guy, Jimmy Rogers en Freddie King.

Onlangs verscheen van Mick Pini in samenwerking met de Britse producer Craig Marchall (Audio 54) een EP getiteld “Pastoral” met vier nummers, die alvast een opwarmertje vormt voor het album dat later dit jaar moet gaan verschijnen. Het is een voortzetting van de samenwerking tussen de beide heren, dat vorig jaar is begonnen bij het album “Backtrack”. De titel “Pastoral” is gekozen omdat het in de kunstwereld staat voor de schildering van liefde in een eenvoudig landschap. Mick en Craig stellen dat ook hun muziek een eenvoudige schilderij is, dat veel mensen zal aanspreken, zonder hoog van de toren te blazen. Het titelnummer, waarmee de EP opent, geeft dit precies weer. Het is een prachtig rustig gespeelde instrumental, die de luisteraar laat wegdromen en meeneemt naar een andere wereld. “Careless” is een al oudere compositie van Pini, die hier door he en Marshall zijn opgefrist. Het derde nummer “Spark” is geschreven en gezongen door Craig Marshall en swingt lekker door. “Just Playin’”, waarmee het plaatje wordt afgesloten is een ouderwetse klinkende instrumentale blues met een fraaie interactie tussen Pini’s gitaar en een saxofoon. Een leuke plaatje en het belooft in ieder geval veel voor het volledige album, dat op stapel staat. Laat maar komen, ik kan niet wachten.

Despite his enormous talent, Mick Pini has never achieved superstar status, unlike some of his contemporaries. He has remained relatively unknown to the general public, while his colleagues spoke highly of him. Eric Clapton, for example, has called him the only legitimate successor to Peter Green. The title “Pastoral” was chosen because in the art world it represents the depiction of love in a simple landscape. Mick and Craig state that their music is also a simple painting, which will appeal to many people, without any moasting from the maker. The title track, with which the EP opens, shows this exactly. It is a beautifully quietly played instrumental, which lets the listener dream away and takes it to another world. “Careless” is an older composition by Pini, refreshed here by him and Marshall. The third song “Spark” is written and sung by Craig Marshall and swings nicely. “Just Playin'”, which concludes the record, is an old-fashioned-sounding instrumental blues with a nice interaction between Pini's guitar and a saxophone. A fine record and it certainly promises a lot for the full album, which is in the pipeline. Bring it on, I can't wait.
