Debuut: One L - Between The Eys

Athens, Georgia music veteran Philip Kohnen’s solo project, one L, announces its debut studio album, “Between The Eyes,” released on March 5.  

Representing more than 15 years of musical evolution, "Between the Eyes" spans a wide range of influences, genres and mindsets. Drawing on sounds from Brazil, Africa, Cuba and the United States, one L's musical choreography carries listeners around the world before landing in Athens. 

Following a hiatus from music to build a business and his family, Kohnen began recording tracks for “Between The Eyes” in 2015 at Japanski Studios with Matt Tamasin (Producer/Engineer). He finished the album in February 2020 with Brent Hedrick (Drums), Preston Smith (Bass), Lucas McAulliffe (Producer) and Ethan Mullenax (Engineer) at the Chase Street Warehouse district. 

Kohnen first discovered Cuban, Brazilian and African music as a junior at the University of Georgia where he was influenced by the sounds of Jorge Ben, Orchestra Baobab, Ali Farka Touré, Cachao and Buena Vista Social Club. A collection of both older and newer songs from Kohnen, “Between The Eyes” accurately captures this moment in his musical evolution.

“I became infected with the rhythm and wanted to recreate the sound I was absorbing with ‘Between The Eyes,’” Kohnen said. “I can say with confidence that this music is unique, honest and authentic. ”
