New Single: Stephen Foster & Howler - 'Cathead Blues

Stephen Foster & Howler - 'Cathead Blues' Single & Southern album

"Cathead Blues" was written in an hour while recording the "Howl At The Blues" album in 2006, when we needed songs to complete the project. I had a double abscess tooth going on causing terrible pounding pain, but we had to get the vocal done to deliver the album to pressing. So, I took 3 Advil, smoked one, and drank 4 shots of scotch. Put an ice pack on the recording desk, laid the SM57 on the desk, laid my face on the ice pack and sang this vocal in one take.

Stephen Foster & Howler is known for the hits "Mad as Hell", "Medicine Man", "Mango Tree", "Mama's Goin' Dancin', When The Train Comes Home" and "Cathead Blues" among others. Based out of Muscle Shoals, Sweet Home, Alabama, the 4-piece group is a Boogie-Woogie & Blues act, playing concerts, festivals, and large venues. The combination of Blues, Rock, Americana & Boogie-Woogie music gives them the flexibility to play Blues, Country, Rock, Americana & Roots festivals, and concerts. This is a heavy act with pounding beats from Psychedelic Blues to Delta & Boogie-Woogie, featuring power piano and at times, dual slide guitars. Stephen Foster also plays solo concerts on piano and guitars, singing his hits and telling tales of the famous musicians he's worked with. He has played solo to crowds of 10,000+.

Singer-songwriter, keyboardist, guitarist Stephen Foster is a 50-year veteran of the music business, inking his first recording contract in 1969 as a stablemate to Percy Sledge, and writing for Lynyrd Skynyrd. As the house guitarist at Quinvy Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL, his session credits are legendary, working with a multitude of great artists who recorded there in the 70s. Signed to 20th Century Fox and later Janus Records as a labelmate to Robert Palmer, he walked away from the restrictions of big label deals and started Whitehorse Records in 1979, charting Cashbox Top-40 with "For The Love of A Girl". He owned recording studios for 20 years and was an integral part in the Indie move to bust the majors but began concentrating on his own recordings in 2000. A series of Indie hits followed, continuing to present day.

Contributors to Howler include guitar wizards Jay Jernigan and Kelvin Holley, Little Richard's guitarist for many years; Bassists DelRay Smith and J.R. Byrd who played with Jerry Lee Lewis for 10 years touring Europe and the United States; and Eddy Russell, Evan Lane and John Tombyll on drums & vocals.

Stephen has shared the Concert Stage with: North Mississippi Allstars/Drive-By Truckers/Jason Isbell/Kansas/Jimmy Hall/Kansas/Ricky Nelson/The Wailers/Bonnie Bramlett/Cowboy/The Cars/5th Dimension/Percy Sledge, and many more.

"Stephen Foster and Howler stand and deliver - at times the music is reminiscent of the best of Little Feat, at other times injected with passionate blues riffs, but always completely satisfying. Real Southern talent that raises the bar for the rest of us." - Michael “Buffalo” Smith, GRITZ MAGAZINE
