Wat krijg je als je twee muzikale zwaargewichten samenvoegt? Het kan op een vreselijke manier mis gaan, botsende ego’s e.d. Zo niet in het geval van Eric Von Herzen en Johnny Main. Daar blijkt de samenwerking prima te lukken. Von Herzen, mondharmonicaman bij o.m. Walter Trout, Social Distortion,

The Atomic Road Kings en Junior Watson, en Johnny Main, zanger en guitarist bij de The 44’s, besloten vorig jaar als The Atomic 44’s de koppen bij elkaar te steken. Het resultaat hiervan is nu verkrijgbaar als het album met de verwachtingsvolle titel “Volume One”. 

Op het album wordt het tweetal bijgestaan door Bill Stuve Gary Ferguson (drums), (bas), Deb Ryder (zang), Taryn Donath (toetsen) en Kid Ramos (gitaar). “Volume One” bevat negen zelfgeschreven nummers, die zich allemaal bewegen in het grijze gebied dat ‘Americana’ wordt genoemd en in dit geval duidelijk neigt naar vet rockende blues. Dat is meteen duidelijk bij de opener “The Boogeyman”, dat eerder al hoge ogen gooide als single. Verdere nummers die wat mij betreft een speciale vermelding verdienen zijn “Fade To Black” en “Ol’ Mexico”. Een prima plaat.

What do you get when you merge two musical heavyweights? Things can go terribly wrong, egos clashing, etc. Well, not in the case of Eric Von Herzen and Johnny Main. There, the collaboration turns out to be successful. Von Herzen, harmonica man with Walter Trout, Social Distortion, The Atomic Road Kings and Junior Watson, and Johnny Main, singer and guitarist with The 44's, decided to get together last year as The Atomic 44's. The result of this is now available as the album with the expectant title “Volume One”. 

 On the album, the pair are joined by Bill Stuve (bass), Gary Ferguson (drums), Deb Ryder (vocals), Taryn Donath (keys) and Kid Ramos (guitar). “Volume One” contains nine self-written songs, all of which move in the gray area called "Americana", which in this case clearly leans towards fat rocking blues. This is immediately clear with the opener “The Boogeyman”, which was already very successful as a single. Other songs that deserve a special mention in my opinion are “Fade To Black” and “Ol 'Mexico”. A great record.
