 Ook Israël heeft een levendige bluesscene. In ons land is iemand als Ori Naftaly geen onbekende, hoewel deze inmiddels naar de VS is verhuisd. Ook Roy Young en de Blues Rebels zijn volwaardige vertegenwoordigers van de blues uit dat land.

Uit deze Blues Rebels komt gitarist Andy Watts, die ook al samenwerkte met artiesten als Bernard Allison, Johnny Winter en Joe Louis Walker. Aan dit rijtje kunnen we nu ook Kenny Neal toevoegen. Dat is toch niet de allerminste die we hier aan de knoppen vinden.

 Op Andy’s recente album “Supergroove” horen we daarnaast ook de al genoemde Joe Louis Walker, zangeres Eliza Neals, soulzanger Roy Young naast een band, die bestaat uit bassist Ilan Hillel, drummer Tom Bollig, toetsenspeler Eyal Klein, trompettist Gregory Riykin en saxofonist Ioram Linker. Van de ten nummers zijn er vijf eigen composities. Met de opener, het instrumentale titelnummer “Supergroove” geeft de band meteen een passend visitekaartje af. Het is meteen een weergave hoe de rest van het album gaat worden: stampende en swingende soulblues. Dit wordt gevolgd door het door Roy Young gezongen “Living Hand To Mouth”, waarin Coastin’ Hank de mondharmonica blaast. Erg fraai zijn daarnaast “Burning Deep” met Joe Louis Walker, de bijzonder eigenzinnige versie van “Supernatural” met bijzonder mooie hoofdrollen voor gitaar, trompet en orgel, en het door Eliza Neals gezongen “Blues Of The Month”. Het is opvallend dat, ondanks de grote namen die meedoen, de gitaar van Andy Watts de hoofdrolspeler is. Hard en rauw of zacht en liefdevol, het is en blijft de dominante factor. Absoluut topwerk.

It is immediately a representation of what the rest of the album will be like: pounding and swinging soul blues. This is followed by Roy Young's "Living Hand To Mouth", in which Coastin 'Hank blows the harmonica. Also very nice are “Burning Deep” with Joe Louis Walker, the very idiosyncratic version of “Supernatural” with particularly beautiful lead roles for guitar, trumpet and organ, and the by Eliza Neals sung “Blues Of The Month”. It is striking that, despite the big names participating, Andy Watts' guitar is the protagonist. Hard and raw or soft and loving, it is and remains the dominant factor. Absolute top work.
