Een ongeluk bij de Amerikaanse spoorwegen, waar hij destijds in dienst was, zorgde in 2009 dat Willie Jackson daar niet meer kon werken. Omdat hij zijn leven lang al muziek maakte, in koren zong en liedjes schreef was de keuze voor een andere carrière al snel gemaakt. Het zingen heeft Jackson, jongste van zes kinderen, geleerd in de kerk waar zijn vader dominee was. Hij is woonachtig in Savannah, Georgia.
