Zeer invloedrijke Amerikaanse jazzsaxofonist David Sanborn (78) overleden

De Amerikaanse jazzsaxofonist David Sanborn is zondag op 78-jarige leeftijd overleden aan de gevolgen van prostaatkanker. Dat heeft de familie maandag bekendgemaakt op X.

  Sanborn, geboren in 1945 in de Amerikaanse staat Florida, begon als kind saxofoon te spelen. Later had hij zijn eigen radioshow en speelde hij onder meer met Al Jarreau, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, Sting, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Miles Davis en Roger Waters. Hij maakte ook even deel uit van de ‘Saturday Night Live’-band, en was een vaste gast van Paul Schaffers band in ‘Late Night with David Letterman’.

 Billy Joel’s originele saxofonist Richie Cannata komt op 22 januari naar Nederland om met The Billy Joel Experience een uniek concert te geven in De Meerpaal. Richie maakte deel uit van de legendarische band die Billy Joel (USA) boven zichzelf liet uitstijgen vanaf het album ‘Turnstiles’ via ‘The Stranger’ langs ‘52nd Street’ uitkomend bij ‘Glass Houses’.

Tegenwoordig toert Richie nog steeds met twee andere leden van deze oorspronkelijke bezetting, Liberty DeVitto en Russel Javors, onder de toepasselijke naam ´The Lords of 52nd Street´. Het repertoire waarmee de meester doorbrak en de echte 'Billy Joel Sound’ komt van déze band, van déze musici. De historische saxofoonsolo's zijn dus nagenoeg allemaal van Richie Cannata.

Eric Demmer' - So Fine

Everything Is "So Fine" on Saxman Eric Demmer's Debut CD from Gulf Coast Records, Coming on November 18

Gulf Coast Records announces the signing of Texas-based sax great Eric Demmer, and will release his label debut CD, So Fine, on November 18. Backing the sax work and vocals of the blues/soul/rock veteran are a cadre of solid all-star players, along with such special guest as Gulf Coast Records main man Mike Zito, plus guitarists Jonn Del Toro Richardson, Mark May, and The Funky Rick Marcel; the Grooveline Horns; with added vocals by Melanie Covington, Darrell Lacy and Eric’s daughter, Danielle, whose funky vocals show this apple did not fall far away from the Demmer tree. So Fine was produced by Mike Zito and Eric Demmer, with mixing and mastering done by Ernie Wells of Eighth Note Productions.

UB40-saxofonist Brian Travers is overleden. Dat meldt de Britse band op sociale media. Travers, die kanker had, is 62 jaar geworden.

"Met veel verdriet maken we bekend dat onze vriend, mede-oprichter en legende Brian David Travers is overleden", schrijven de bandleden. "Hij overleed gisteravond in het bijzijn van zijn familie na een lange strijd.".....
