The Orchard is a beautiful collection of songs; Strong in melody and rich in poetic imagery, that dives deep emotionally. But the overriding feeling on this album is one of hope and light and possibility - just what we need in these troubled times.

“In the middle of writing this album I realized something - that songs are in fact a form of manifestation. An artist sings their songs over and over while recording, and then every night on tour. Whatever we do on repeat we start to embody, to become. Similar to how mantras are chanted or prayers are recited, that repetition has power. I wanted to be conscious of this element as I wrote: still mining the depths of raw emotion and truth, as that is the job of the songwriter, but also being sure to tap into the light, the hope, the sense of possibility that is always there in all of us if we can uncover it. I hope these songs will help others access that hope too.

The album opens with the title track, “The Orchard”, which beautifully sets the tone for the rest of the album. Poetic, nostalgic, emotive and full of light.

“The Orchard” refers to a time of youth and innocence, when dreams are forming and life is full of wonder. The song is about how that sweetness is still alive within each of us, often buried deep within our psyche, but held in the memory of our cells: Through the disappointments and heartbreaks of life, we build protection around ourselves. We harden to be safe inside. But what if our cells have memory and hold emotion? There have been many books written about how our bodies hold trauma. Surely the same can be true for joy. What if we can access the purity and hope and vulnerability within ourselves all over again? “Time is nothing to that sunlit heart” is the last line of the song. And I believe that to be true!”

“In the Path of Hurricanes” sounds like magical realism put to music. Steeped in rich imagery from her subtropical Bermuda, it has a driving sonic landscape reminiscent of The War on Drugs

The haunting “Sleep in Snow” is a love song sung over an electronic backing and imagery from the stark cold beauty of the frozen north.

“New Life”, is all about renewal and letting go: "The things we leave behind, the water in the wake, and how the dreams unwind, everything fades away, in the end, but then, New life” she sings to a cool Fleetwood Mac-esque beat.

“This Wild World” is a hymn and lament for the natural world. With a tribal beat, and sounds you can’t quite name, it feels earthy and primal

The closing track, “Anchored”, is a touching love song from mother to son.

The album was recorded in London with producer, Tim Bran.

I knew after I’d written the songs that I wanted to record with Tim Bran, because I loved the sound he’d gotten with Haevn and London Grammar. He was clearly tuned in to the emotion of songs, and knows how to keep the production authentic and natural but also contemporary. I liked his musical aesthetic, his vibe.

We made the album over the course of 6 weeks last winter in a rather dismal part of London. I walked 45 minutes to the studio every day in the rain which I loved (I can never complain of London Rain now!) And then we wouldn’t emerge for the next 8 or 9 hours. The album was predominantly made with just Tim and myself, each of us throwing ideas back and forth - we had a wonderful rapport and everything just flowed. He’s one of those insanely multi-talented people - playing bass, electric guitar, all kinds of keyboards and synths as well as programming and engineering.

When it was finished, Heather gave her freshly mastered album to a few of her closest friends to listen to, and here’s what one of them came back with:

“This really feels like it’s a gathering of all your previous albums into one that is so mature (not as in old, as in deep!) It’s a deep thought-provoking body of work. And it feels one hundred percent authentically you. You are standing in your own truth - this comes through the strongest. And with each song there are these rich layers - the deeper layers of you. I just LOVE it!!!”
