Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell put Indianapolis on the blues map back in 1929, and Christopher Wyze just brought their sound roaring back to life. Christopher Wyze & The Tellers have released their new single, “I’m Going Back To Tennessee,” Originally recorded by the Indianapolis blues pioneers nearly a century ago, the track marks the first release from the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Naptown Blues.

The 11-song project pays direct tribute to the blues history of Indianapolis, Indiana, honouring Carr and Blackwell’s role in shaping the genre. Their groundbreaking recordings helped establish the city as a genuine force in blues music, and Wyze’s new album sets out to carry that legacy forward while filtering it through his own band’s voice and perspective.

The single found its first home with The UK Americana Bar Show, premiering as part of Sam’s Pick of the Week, a strong early signal of the attention ‘Naptown Blues’ is already generating ahead of its release.

Wyze didn’t just cover the song, he rebuilt the recording process around Carr and Blackwell’s original approach. “We recorded ‘I’m Going Back to Tennessee,’ and all the songs on this album without drums or percussion. That’s the way Leroy and Scrapper recorded. You’ll also hear lots of acoustic instruments: acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, acoustic harmonicas, plus just a single vocal. Again, that’s how Carr and Blackwell recorded things.”

That commitment to the source material gives the track a stripped-down warmth, letting Wyze’s vocal and the acoustic instrumentation carry every ounce of feeling the original songwriters poured into it decades ago.
