Ophiuchus, the second full-length album by acclaimed genre-blurring Nashville-based singer-songwriter Afton Wolfe, which is scheduled for release on November 30 2025 on Grandiflora Records.
“I’m trying to cast a complex Magic spell, the purpose of which is not fully known to me” Afton Wolfe says about the year-long album release process that he has orchestrated and somehow executed.
Wolfe began the incantation in December of 2024, when he released ‘Invocation’ as the Sun traveled into the constellation Sagittarius. Since then, a new song from this impending opus has been released in conjunction with the Sun’s true zodiacal path through the heavens. An equally significant collection of cosmic illustrations by Cora Lee has also depicted each constellation and presumably enhanced the mystique and/or potency of the sorcery.
On November 30, the Sun will enter the little-understood constellation Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), and the spell will be complete.

On that day, the album and title track, Ophiuchus, will be released and finalize the 13-song album to be released on double vinyl and include such instantly-iconic songs as the nuevo tango co-write with Judy Blank ‘Rules of War’ (Scorpio); the country waltz anthem “I Deserve to be Forgiven,’ (Libra); Wolfe’s heartfelt ode ‘Crooked Roads’ (Leo); funk-hop-gospel banger ‘Forgive Yourself’ (Aquarius), the anguishing, anti-genocide speed-waltz ‘One Million Children’ (Aries); and the reflective dirge ‘Winter Comes for Mary’ (Capricorn).
For the last few years, Wolfe’s musical output has been impressive in quantity and quality - Petrionius’ Last Meal (EP, 2021), Kings for Sale (LP, 2022), Twenty-Three (EP, 2023), The Harvest (EP, 2023), appearing on Can’t Steal My Fire: The Songs of David Olney (alongside such luminaries as Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Townes Van Zandt, Willis Alan Ramsey, Mary Gauthier and more), and releasing cover collaborations on ‘Ooh La La’ (with Cary Hudson) and ‘Dead Flowers’ (with Jaimee Harris) - earning praise and acclaim worldwide.
Afton Wolfe settled back into Nashville for the cooler weather of 2025 - after triumphantly touring the Southwest and Northeast US respectively, appearing once again at the Tropic of Cancer Festival in Todos Santos, BCS Mexico (with Cordovas, Andy Frasco, The Mother Hips and more), and being selected as an official AmericanaFest showcasing artist.
And once the conjuring of Ophiuchus is complete, more of the path will be revealed. Or destroyed.
Two more songs from the album will be released prior to the album - ‘Rules of War’ on October 31 (Libra), followed by ‘I Deserve to Be Forgiven’ on November 23 (Scorpio), while the title track and full album will be released simultaneously on November 30 (Ophiuchus).

“Afton Wolfe’s sound is a lot of things. It’s Southern Soul and spooky, back-alley Blues, dark, Country noir and Indie Gospel, all delivered via the singer songwriter package.” The Alternate Root “Wolfe sings with authority, experience & realism. He could sing songs that are Tom Waits-embellished or go full-tilt bluesy like Howlin’ Wolf. Lyrically, Wolfe chooses songs that are excellent storytelling pieces.” Americana Highways “It's the most grizzled debut you'll hear all year, and one of the best.” Classic Rock (on Kings for Sale) “Wolfe stands among the country’s most valuable troubadours, blending Americana, blues, country, jazz, and rock into songs that reflect the full spectrum of life and beyond. Wolfe is the anti-pop star in the most treasured sense.” Glide Magazine “"Kings For Sale" is magnificent both because of its profound songwriting and the variety of instruments used; in addition to piano and guitars, there's also trombone, horn, saxophone and even clarinet. Add to that that charismatic voice - definitely one of the most extraordinary albums of the year so far.” Ox Fanzine (Germany) “It's simple: if Charles Bukowski had recorded a record, it would undoubtedly have sounded like this one...” Paris Move “Afton Wolfe is a songwriter of striking originality but also of deep seriousness” RNR “… a master at absorbing influences and a true godfather of blues-country noir.” Ruta 66 (Spain) “I don’t know what to call Afton Wolfe’s music besides Americana. He picks and chooses pieces of blues and folk, country and jazz, and stitches them together in a sound that’s uniquely his own.” Twangville |
