De in 1976 in Istanbul geboren Özgür Hazar is een in het Belgische Leuven woonachtige blues-/rockgitarist, die onlangs zijn tweede album heeft uitgebracht. Van 2006 tot 2008 speelde hij in diverse bands in Philadelphia, USA. Hij keerde daarna terug naar Istanbul, waar hij met zijn band in de clubs speelde.

Sinds maart 2018 woont Özgür in Leuven. In september 2019 verscheen zijn eerste single in 2020 gevolgd door de goed ontvangen debuut-cd “Sad And Blue”. In 2022 won hij de Belgian Blues Challenge, waardoor hij België mocht vertegenwoordigen op de European Blues Challenge.

De band is inmiddels omgedoopt als Özgür Hazar’s Blues Syndicate en heeft onlangs het album “Way Back Home” is verschenen. Naast naamgever Hazar bestaat de band uit zangeres Arianne Musschoot (op de website genoemde als Arianne Yaya), toetsenman Pieter Akkermans, bassist Geert Zonderman en drummer Vincent Caers. Op het album staan zeven eigen nummers, waarvan twee zijn meegeschreven door enkele leden van de band. De enige cover is “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean”, dat we kennen van Ruth Brown en diverse anderen. Het album begint stevig met het rauw rockende “Counting The Reasons”, dat wordt gevolgd door het wat rustigere “Can’t Blame The Blues”. Het titelnummer “Way Back Home” klinkt ingetogen en valt op door het jazzy gitaarwerk. Het swingende “Downtown Philly” is een duet tussen Arianne en Özgür. Deze wordt gevolgd door de slowblues “Can’t Stop Missing You” en de al genoemde cover “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean”. In de bluesrock “Holy Man” scheurt Özgür weer eens lekker door op zijn gitaar. De afsluiter is het intieme, akoestisch gespeelde “Foodsteps”.

Met het nieuwe album heeft Özgür Hazar het pad voortgezet, dat hij met zijn eersteling “Sad And Blue” had ingezet. Wederom hebben we hier een fijn album met heerlijke mix van blues- en rocknummers. Een absolute aanrader dus.

Özgür Hazar, born in Istanbul in 1976, is a blues/rock guitarist living in Leuven, Belgium, who recently released his second album. From 2006 to 2008 he played in various bands in Philadelphia, USA. He then returned to Istanbul, where he played in the clubs with his band. Özgür has been living in Leuven since March 2018. His first single was released in September 2019, followed in 2020 by the well-received debut CD “Sad And Blue”. In 2022 he won the Belgian Blues Challenge, which allowed him to represent Belgium at the European Blues Challenge.

The band has now been renamed as Özgür Hazar's Blues Syndicate and has recently released the album “Way Back Home”. In addition to namesake Hazar, the band consists of singer Arianne Musschoot (on the website she is called Arianne Yaya), keyboardist Pieter Akkermans, bassist Geert Zonderman and drummer Vincent Caers. The album contains seven original songs, two of which were co-written by some members of the band. The only cover is “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean”, which we know from Ruth Brown and several others. The album starts off strongly with the raw rocking “Counting The Reasons”, which is followed by the somewhat quieter “Can't Blame The Blues”. The title track “Way Back Home” sounds subdued and stands out because of the jazzy guitar work. The swinging “Downtown Philly” is a duet between Arianne and Özgür. This is followed by the slow blues “Can't Stop Missing You” and the aforementioned cover “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean”. In the blues rock “Holy Man” Özgür rips away on his guitar again. The closing track is the intimate, acoustically played “Foodsteps”.

With the new album, Özgür Hazar has continued the path he started with his first release “Sad And Blue”. Once again we have a nice album here with a wonderful mix of blues and rock songs. An absolute recommendation.
