Deb Callahan – Backbone Geschreven door: Eric Campfens i.s.m. BarnOwlBlues | FB Eric Campfens   Het was even wachten – haar vorige album dateert van 2015 – maar nu is het zesde album van de in Philadelphia woonachtige Deb Callahan verschenen, getiteld “Backbone”. Deb is goede blues-/soulzangeres met een stem die zowel krachtig als suikerzoet kan klinken. Op het album wordt zij begeleid door gitarist Allen James, bassist Garry Lee en drummer Tom Walling

. Daarnaast zijn gastrollen weggelegd voor o.m. toetsen speler Danny Schogger, en gitarist Chris Arms, die ook de productie in handen had.

Met deze veelzijdige band komen Debs stem en de songs uitstekend tot hun recht. Van de twaalf nummers zijn er tien door Deb Callahan in samenwerking met Arms, James en Schogger zelf geschreven. De twee covers zijn van Percy Mayfield en Sean Costello. Wat stijl betreft bevinden we ons in de tegen de soul aanleunende blues. De eigen composities zijn kleine verhaaltjes, die allemaal iets vertellen over haar leven of observaties. Uit de nummers blijkt de onzekere wereld, waarin we nu leven, veroorzaakt door de gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen jaren. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn de swingende opener “What I’m Working With”, het bedachtzame “Cleaning House” en het rockende “Still Fighting To Be Free”, dat mijn favoriete nummer op het album is. Dit album is van absoluut grote klasse. Prima songs, goed gemusiceerd, je blijft er naar luisteren. Mijn aanbeveling heeft het zeker.

It took a while - her previous album dates from 2015 - but now the sixth album from Philadelphia-based Deb Callahan has been released, entitled "Backbone". Deb is a good blues / soul singer with a voice that can sound both powerful and sugary sweet. On the album she is accompanied by guitarist Allen James, bassist Garry Lee and drummer Tom Walling. In addition, guest roles are played by keyboard player Danny Schogger, and guitarist Chris Arms, who also handled the production.

With this versatile band, Deb's voice and the songs come to full deployment. Of the twelve songs, ten were written by Deb Callahan herself in collaboration with Arms, James and Schogger. The two covers are by Percy Mayfield and Sean Costello. In terms of style, we are in the blues leaning towards the soul. Her own compositions are small stories, which all tell something about her life or observations. The numbers show the uncertain world in which we now live, caused by the events of recent years. Examples include the swinging opener "What I'm Working With", the thoughtful "Cleaning House" and the rocking "Still Fighting To Be Free", which is my favorite song on the album. This album is absolutely top class. Great songs, well played, you keep listening to them. My recommendation definitely has it.
