Single: RODRIGO Y GABRIELA - Descending To Nowhere

RODRIGO Y GABRIELA: eerste single/videoclip "Descending To Nowhere"  van hun nieuwe album "In Between Thoughts... A New World" (21-4-2023) “The video is based on a specific chapter/segment of a storyline written by Rodrigo Y Gabriela where a character has a spiritual journey towards non-dualism”, says director Olallo Rubio.

“So this video is just a small part of a larger story. They always imagined this world in animation, but we thought it’d be conceptually interesting to start in this dark, bleak, live action world and then enter the animated universe in color. I called artists Andy Butler (British) and Pogo (Mexican), with whom I worked before on a documentary about Alejandro Jodorowsky (the Chilean multi-disciplinary artist) because I knew they’d understand the spiritual/surreal concept we were developing”.

Van het wereldwijd zeer populaire Mexicaanse (acoustische) gitaar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela, bestaande uit Rodrigo Sanchez en Gabriela Quintero, verschijnt hun nieuw album “In Between Thoughts… A New World”. Het duo bracht al vijf studio-albums uit, beginnende met “Re-Foc” uit 2002, en hun laatste worp “Mettavolution” won er in 2020 een Grammy Award als ‘Best Contemporary Instrumental Album’ mee. Het 7 tracks tellende album werd geproduceerd door Dave Sardy, bevatte 6 eigen composities, maar werd het meest bekend door de cover-versie van Pink Floyd’s “Echoes”. Ook ontvingen ze begin vorig jaar een Grammy nominatie voor hun versie van “The Struggle Within” (afkomstig van het Metallica tribute-album “The Metallica Blacklist” als ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’. Om deze cover-traditie in ere te houden, en om voor de vele fans de lange wachttijd op eigen nieuw werk wat te verzachten, bracht het duo afgelopen najaar ook twee verse ‘renditions’ van klassiekers als digitale singles uit; in dit geval Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Symphony No. 25 In G Minor, K. 183, First Movement” en Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes”.

Hun grote doorbraak was alweer ruim 10 jaar geleden toen ze met Hans Zimmer de soundtrack schreven van de mega-populaire film “Pirates Of The Caribbean”. Dit zorgde onder meer voor ‘worldwide headline shows at legendary venues as the Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks (Colorado), Radio City Music Hall (New York), Royal Albert Hall (London) and Le Zenith (Paris). They even performed at the White House with Beyonce in the Obama-era’.

De muziek van Rodrigo Y Gabriela is een dynamische mengeling van Latin, world, klassieke muziek, folk en instrumentale gitaar rock; ‘the music is built on harnessing the flash, power and speed of rock and metal, and filtering it through the passion, soul, technique and discipline of nuevo flamenco. Their showy, emotional sound is marked by Quintero’s syncopated, hooky percussive rhythms and rapid-fire strummed vamps and Sanchez’s incendiary, single- and dual-string melodic leads’.

De eerste single “Descending To Nowhere” is de definitieve versie van enkele korte ‘Stages’, die eind vorig jaar via prachtige video-appetizers al als voorproefjes op het nieuwe album op de mensheid werden losgelaten. De nieuwe songs werden opgenomen en ‘self-produced’ in hun eigen studio in Ixtapa en ontstonden ‘from a transformative period of spiritual awakening and reading a lot of Hindu philosophy, and a subsequent burst of unfettered creativity; the non-dualism notion of a single, infinite and indivisible reality, whose nature is pure consciousness, from which all objects and selves derive their apparantly independent existence’. Hun nieuwe ‘journey of the mind’-album borduurt voort op de bekende Rodrigo Y Gabriela sound, maar het virtuose, innovatieve en spirituele gitaar duo barst van het zelfvertrouwen en het cinematische aspect is nog verder uitgebouwd, met moderne ‘action-packed’ electronische en orkestrale elementen!
