Als een soort van 'Wandergeselle' (om het bij Duitse begrippen te houden) leerde hij het vak in de clubs van Chicago en als lid en bandleider van Memo Gonzales & The Bluescasters, waarmee hij 15 jaar lang de hele wereld over toerde en met zowat iedereen speelde die naam en rang had binnen de blues.
In november is zijn nieuwe album verschenen getiteld “Night Shift”. Ook op dit album laat Strauss horen waarom hij bij de top van de Europese blues hoort. Op het album staan elf nummers, waarvan tien van eigen hand. Zijn band bestaat uit drummer Alex Lex, bassist DuVernay, keyboardist Paul Jobson en gitarist Ali Neander, die met Strauss een hechte eenheid vormen. Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon speelt op een tweetal nummers mee. Meteen bij het eerste nummer “Stand Strong Together” zit de gang er goed in. Het is een midtempo nummer met een actuele tekst. Kai Strauss is een gitarist, die uitblinkt in smaakvol spel. Hij hoeft het niet te hebben van veel noten per seconde, de rustmomenten leggen de nadruk op de nummers. Dit is vooral duidelijk in een bluesballad als “I Done Got Over You”. In “Storming In Chicago” contrasteert de felle gitaarstijl van Toronzo Cannon mooi met de rustige stijl van Strauss. Nummers als “Icebound” en “Hard Bargain” zijn een fraai eerbetoon aan zijn voorbeelden, respectievelijk Albert Collins en Albert King. Wederom een uitstekende plaat van deze Duitse bluesman. Aanrader.

The German guitarist Kai Strauss has been around for over 25 years in the blues world and is no longer 'just another guitar player from Europe', as his colleague Otis Grand once said about him. As a kind of 'Wandergeselle' (to stick to German standards) he learned his trade in the clubs of Chicago and as a member and bandleader of Memo Gonzales & The Bluescasters, with whom he toured the world for 15 years and with nearly everyone played who had name and rank within the blues.
His new album titled “Night Shift” was released in November. Strauss again shows on this album why he belongs to the top of the European blues. The album contains eleven songs, ten of which are self-written. His band consists of drummer Alex Lex, bassist DuVernay, keyboardist Paul Jobson and guitarist Ali Neander, who form a close unit with Strauss. Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon plays on two songs. Immediately with the first song “Stand Strong Together” the band is in good shape. It is a mid-tempo song with a current text. Kai Strauss is a guitarist who excels in tasteful playing. He doesn't have to rely on many notes per second, the moments of rest emphasize the songs. This is especially evident in a blues ballad like “I Done Got Over You”. In “Storming In Chicago” Toronzo Cannon's fierce guitar style contrasts nicely with Strauss's calm style. Songs like “Icebound” and “Hard Bargain” are a nice tribute to his role models, Albert Collins and Albert King respectively. Another excellent record from this German bluesman. Recommended.
