He Who Walks Behind The Rows - The Lucky Ones Died First
For as long as I can remember, I've always been fascinated by horror. Horror is one of the few genres who dares to go one step further, beyond the limits of what's allowed. It feeds on people's fear, no matter how absurd some of the scenarios might be. Home invasion, invasions from outer space, masked murderers, haunted places, devil worship, the living dead, cannibals, nature strikes back, monsters, found footage - Terror has no shape (to quote the tagline from The Blob). There's something for everyone. Horror, at a safe distance, that makes you loose your breath for a while - behind the pages of the book or in front of the tv on the sofa.
It's been written songs based on horror movies and books many times throughout the years but as far as I know there's been no artist who exclusively based all his/her songs on the genre. I might be wrong though but no matter what, horror is nothing that you can claim your own. There's no one who can decide what is and what is not horror or what artform that characterizes the concept. Just like with so many other things and feelings, it's individual.
The first song I wrote was Children of the Corn, based on Stephen King's short story and all of you who watched your fair share of horror movies or/and read your fair share of horror novels will probably get the origin of He Who Walks Behind The Rows. If not, maybe it's time to visit the children in Gatlin, Nebraska.
The fourteen songs on my album The Lucky Ones Died First are all based on horror movies that have a special place in my heart. Even though many of the movies may never get the recognition they deserve, I recommend them all. Who knows? Maybe this album will be your introduction to the glorious world of horror movies.

He Who Walks Behind The Rows - The Lucky Ones Died First
Zolang ik me kan herinneren, ben ik altijd gefascineerd geweest door horror. Horror is een van de weinige genres die een stap verder durft te gaan, buiten de grenzen van wat mag. Het voedt zich met de angst van mensen, hoe absurd sommige scenario's ook zijn. Huisinvasie, invasies vanuit de ruimte, gemaskerde moordenaars, spookachtige plaatsen, duivelsaanbidding, de levende doden, kannibalen, de natuur slaat terug, monsters, found footage - Terreur heeft geen vorm (om de slogan van The Blob te citeren). Er is voor elk wat wils. Horror, op veilige afstand, waar je even buiten adem van raakt - achter de pagina's van het boek of voor de tv op de bank.
Er zijn door de jaren heen vaak liedjes geschreven op basis van horrorfilms en boeken, maar voor zover ik weet is er geen artiest geweest die al zijn/haar liedjes uitsluitend op het genre baseerde. Ik kan het echter mis hebben, maar wat er ook gebeurt, horror is niets dat je van jezelf kunt claimen. Er is niemand die kan beslissen wat wel en niet horror is of welke kunstvorm het concept kenmerkt. Net als met zoveel andere dingen en gevoelens, is het individueel.
Het eerste nummer dat ik schreef was Children of the Corn, gebaseerd op het korte verhaal van Stephen King en iedereen die een behoorlijk deel van de horrorfilms heeft bekeken en/of een behoorlijk deel van de horrorromans heeft gelezen, zal waarschijnlijk de oorsprong van He Who Walks Behind The begrijpen. Rijen. Zo niet, dan is het misschien tijd om de kinderen in Gatlin, Nebraska, te bezoeken.
De veertien nummers op mijn album The Lucky Ones Died First zijn allemaal gebaseerd op horrorfilms die een speciaal plekje in mijn hart hebben. Hoewel veel van de films misschien nooit de erkenning krijgen die ze verdienen, raad ik ze allemaal aan. Wie weet? Misschien wordt dit album je kennismaking met de glorieuze wereld van horrorfilms.
