Shaggy Dogs – Sorry For The Delay

 Is het blues? Is het rock 'n roll? Is het een beetje van allebei? Nee, het is blues, het is rock 'n roll en het is gewoon veel van allebei. Zelf noemen ze hun muziek ‘fiesta blues ’n roll’ en pubrock en denkend aan Dr. Feelgood heeft het er ook wel wat van weg. Maar ik hoor ook de rock van Jesus Volt en de high-energy blues van Hound Dog Taylor. Deze Franse band, bestaande uit Red (zang, harmonica), Jacker (gitaar), Toma (bas), Guillermo (drums, percussie) en Ben (piano, orgel), hebben met hun versie van blues 'n roll in eigen land en de rest van Europa al twee decennia lang de podia onveilig gemaakt.

Het heeft na hun vorige album “All Inclusive” uit 2018 vier jaar geduurd voordat er weer eens iets van de heren op plaat verscheen. Pandemie e.d. zal er ongetwijfeld iets mee te maken hebben gehad. De titel van het nieuwe album is meteen een verontschuldiging voor de wachttijd: “Sorry For The Delay”. Het achtste album is een EP geworden met vijf nummers, waarvan de muziek door de band zelf is geschreven en de teksten van de hand van Laurent Bourdier zijn. Muzikaal is een geringe verschuiving merkbaar van rauwe rock naar de Britse R&B van de jaren zestig. De nummers worden nog met net zo veel energie gespeeld als hun oudere werk. Bijzondere vermelding verdienen “Sweet Baby Mine” met prima slidewerk van Jacker, en “Carpe Diem” met prachtig spel op de baritonsax van Sax Gordon. Een prima EP, het wachten is nu op een nieuwe volwaardig album. Hier lust ik wel meer van.

The eighth album has become an EP with five songs, the music of which is written by the band themselves and the lyrics are by Laurent Bourdier. Musically there is a slight shift from raw rock to the British R&B of the sixties. The songs are still played with just as much energy as their older work. Special mention deserves “Sweet Baby Mine” with excellent slide work by Jacker, and “Carpe Diem” with beautiful playing on the baritone sax by Sax Gordon. A great EP, we now have to wait for a new full-fledged album. I like this more.
